problem with sound

hi,

i am having problems with the sounds on my computer. i am running XP through a HP pavillion and just little sounds little open and close tunes have stopped working. I have tried system restore but it doesn't work. If i go to sound and audio devises and try to change the sound scheme i get a message saying

an exception occired while trying to run "shell32.dll, Control_runDLL mmsys.cpl, 1"

any ideas????

Try reinstalling the drivers for your sound card. Maybe something got hosed along the way.

my pc came with everything pre-installed so i don't have a cd for my sound card - would the drivers be hidden away in some folder somewhere??
