problem with sata drive

ok ive looked through the forum on this situation and i havnt found an answer to my problem im having with my new sata drive. I have an intel desktop board d875pbz and have as my main drive an ide attachment cable. this is my primary which i have windows installed on. I just bought a new sata drive and connected it with the new wire but when i load up the system it dosnt load and says it cannot read the drive causing me to have to power down with the button, windows does not load. I had both drives connected one ide and 1 sata. i tried both sata ports 0 and 1. I even changed the chip from primary to secondary on the back of the new drive. i just need to solve this problem to get my 2nd hd to work. what i wanna do is load it and install windows a second time so then when i boot up i can backup all my stuff from the old drive to the new drive. and then i will format the old drive and use it as storage.

Did you make certain the SATA driver for Windows loaded? What version of Windows?

Just because the motherboard supports the HD it doesn't mean that windows "sees" it!

i have windows xp home edition sp1, i did try to look on the cd from the motherboard and saw no drivers that stated sata, is there a certain way to load them in or am i missing something.

Generally, when you insert a motherboard cd (and you have autorun enabled) it will run and offer you a menu. You should check there.

Also, check the BIOS to see if you can disable the RAID on the SATA drives and use them as standalone drives.

Another thing. When did you flash your BIOS last? There were 4 BIOS updates in under two months (between Oct. 12 and Dec. 1, 2004) with one of them being an SATA problem.

Another thing to check is the manufacturers website for your new SATA hard disk. Severl manufacturers have software you can downlod which will enable you to format the new drive and get Windows to recognise it. I knw that Seagate and Western Digital have this type of software available.

If this is what it say in your Hard drive then you will need a sata driver,AFTER you got the driver,when starting installation at the begining it say if you want to install extra driver like raid or SCSI press F6 and put in your Floppy and take it from there,And Leave the Floppy in until the reboot.

ok i am at the wd website and see 2 drivers i suppose that i can download. 1 says wd serial ata raid controller card driver, and the other says siig serial ata controller card driver. whihc one do i get? they also have data lifeguard diagnostics and tools. not sure if thats any help.

Get the RAID driver. You should (almost certainly) be able to use the driver without the RAID portion.

well i got the driver but i cant get it to load when i boot up. i also tried doin in after loading the windows xp cd and it asks for a 3rd party adapter or something but it couldnt load anything. here's a problem i found in bios. when i have both drives connected and i go into bios it only shows the new sata drive there all the other drives cd,dvd,and original hd do not show up in bios. that it why im guessing i cannot boot properly. so how do i fix this problem so i can boot up and format the new drive through windows. or also is there a way to just format this new drive while my original is dissconnected? i would try to load windows but if my cd drive isnt showing when i have only the new sata drve connected then i cannot load windows xp cd.

ok i fianally got my drive to read by using the original power connector instead of trafering trhe power to the black cable. why it didint work before i dunno but heres the thing now. it boots up but now it read in my cpomputer that i have 3 cd drives when i only have two. my hd is reading as a cd drive for some reason. i tried uninstalling it and then it just showed up again when i refreshed the hardware. any suggestions?
