Hi, I upgraded a users Win98 PC to Win2k and everything works fine, however if any new user logs on and trys to open any office application like Word 2k or Excel 2k it asks for the CD every time, eventhough the user I upgraded works and the local admin profile too. I put in the CD and it says it can't find the files needed, what can I do?

Kind Regards

Andy

Dude:

This is the kind of problem that often results from upgraging instead of using a fresh install. I don't think it can be fixed (other than by a fresh install) because they dropped the ball.

Hi dude, strange because I've done many upgrades before and experienced no problems, just this one and there must be a solution instead of the "easy way out" of a reinstall.

This has nothing to do with "upgrade versus install". This is a permissions issue.

Also, you should read up on Windows Installer (msiexec.exe) technology and how to properly use it. Office uses this technology. It caches a local copy of the install files. If a user cannot access these files (in C:\winnt\installer, it's a hidden folder) you are apt to get these errors.

There is also an Office / Windows Installer clean up utility you can download from MS, that may help you re-install Office cleanly. I recommend it highly.

GOOD LUCK!!

when office was installed it probley wasnt set so that all the functions ran from the harddrive. The best thing to do is just uninstall and reinstall office and select the run all from this computer option. Of course if you have any files withing the office folders you need like personal clip art ect move them b4 unistalling/re-installing. But really you shouldnt loose anything.
