Hi,

I am having an incredibly frustrating problem on a windows XP machine and would appreciate it if anybody could give me some advice on how to get round it.

I have 2 network cards installed on the machine, they both appear in device manager and state they are working properly. When i boot the machine up svchost.exe uses 25% of the CPU and when i cannot open the network connections folder. If i end the process then i can access it but it displays no network connections.

I have found that if i disable the network connections service then svchost.exe does not run at 25% at boot up and it is only when i turn the service back on then attempt to view network connections that the problem arises. Trouble is this means i cannot network the computer!

Anyone have any idea at all? I am tearing my hair out!!

Many thanks

Do you have both cards configured and are they configured on separate LANs with separate IP Addresses with the correct default gateway and subnet mask for the LAN?

One is configured with a valid ip address, subnet and default gateway but the other isnt. The other card has no cable plugged in at present but i would now be able to configure the connection.

Try disabling Automatic Updates then rebooting and see if the issue persists. There is a known issue that causes your symptoms so you could try that as a first test?

I have already tried that one - sorry should have stated that in the original post. Other things i have tried:
Re-installing network cards
Registering the 4 network related dll's
Deleting the network config registry key.

I really am stumped!

Have you tried Disabling (via right-click/disable) any unused Network Adapters?

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Windows.

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.
