I have an application that is basically information capturing with reports. I compiled it into and MSI file which has successfully installed on OS's Windows 98 through to Vista. However...on my PC (Windows 7) when I tried to install it, it stopped near the end and produced this Error message:
"Error 1402. Could not open key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE32\Software\Classes\TypeLib\{831FDD16-11D2-A9FC-0000F8754DA1}\2.0. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel."
When I click "Okay", the installation rolls back.
Here's the thing: My son has Windows 7 as well - and the application installs quite happily on that machine. This lead to believe there is some kind setting that needs to be adjusted and I can't figure it out. Can anyone help?
Much appreciated.

Possibly because his machine already had MSCOMCTL.OCX registered previously for another application

You can try the following: start a command prompt as administrator, then:

CD C:\Windows\SysWOW64
regsvr32 mscomctl.ocx

I tried what you said and it is still behaving as I described. Any other suggestions besides tampering with the registry?

Did you try 'Run As Administrator' option when running the MSI file?

If at first you don't succeed, then sky diving wasn't meant for you!
