problem with menu scrollbars

Hi,

I'm modifying a DHTML menu which I want to show vertical scrollbars only, preferably only if the contents do not fit the window.
For some reason this.style.overflow='auto' does not work. So I put the following:

this.style.overflow='scroll';

and I got both vertical and horizontal scrollbars showing. When I then added:

this.style.overflowX='hidden';

the horizontal scrollbar disappeared (which was good) but for some reason it also disabled the vertical scrollbar (it still partially shows but doesn't work).

Is this a bug does anyone know? I'm using I.E. 6.0

Try setting both:

this.style.overflowX = 'auto';
this.style.overflowY = 'hidden';

If you find that your content is getting clipped horizontally, change 'hidden' to 'visible'.

It's best to use:
this.style.overflow = 'auto';
this.style.overflowY = 'hidden';
for cross-browser compatibility - the -x and -y extensions are IE specific, due to the fact that IE has forcing behaviours for the vertical scrollbar. Order is also important - the general must be applied first and the restrictive form second.

Thanks, but these aren't working. I've tried every combination of overflow/overflowX/overflowY = hidden/scroll/auto.
this.style.overflow='scroll' is the only one that seems to work as it should. Auto doesn't seem to do anything at all if the menu is too big for the page, and setting overflowX to hidden has a side effect of disabling the vertical scrollbar too.

Could you post the full page-code for the element in question? There are a number of issues with overflow which are specific to the way in which the item is being coded. If I can see the code that is giving you the problem, I should be able to give better advice.

I'm very sorry, but I just can't duplicate your problem in any browser I try, under a variety of environments; the scrollbars function as they should every time. Have you tried making a static page with the equivalent style settings for your menu div, to see if you get the same problem in a code-free page?

The only other thing I can suggest is to try making css classes for the various div styles and then bind the divs to those class rather than setting the common style components.

Thanks a lot for your input. I think that you are right and the scrollbars are working but something else is making it seem as though they are not. It seems that the browser window is detecting the presence of large numbers of subitems and is extending the browser window by adding scrollbars to the window. The extended window means that the menu still thinks it fits in it and therefore doesn't produce its own scrollbars.

Oh, hold on then. You mean that the *main* window is producing scrollbars when the menu runs longer than the window-height, rather than the menu stopping at the display-window height?

Yes. It seems that even if the first level of the menu only has six items, if one of its submenus has say, 60 elements, (even when they are not expanded) then the main window produces scrollbars. This causes problems if you don't have a mouse with a scroll button as if you expand the menu then have to move your mouse over to the window scrollbar the menu immediately closes itself again and you can't ever see all the elements in the submenu.

So you don't want the menu to show scrollbars, but the window instead. Ignore everying we've said, and instead try adding this to your CSS:

Okay, I have a fix that's cross-tested on IE 6.0/1 and Gecko (Moz, FF) so far. It's similar to things I've tested on yet other platforms, but that's all I have to attack here. It works by folding the menu div inside yet another div with 100% height and splitting up the generated height and width definitions, as follows:

Final note: IE will screw this up if your main body has margins or padding in the vertical axis by the amount of this spacing. IE incorrectly determines 100% to be inclusive of this spacing, even though it's space that's not available to the inner element. It can be fixed, but only by making an IE-only hack-fix that bolts an equivalent-sized solid border to the bottom of the outer div (which IE extends below the viewport and thus is never seen). I really hope you don't need to do this, as it's a horrible solution.
