Where does it tell you 128+128? Is it on the POST screen during startup?
When you boot into Windows, right-click My Computer and go to Properties. Under the first tab, it should tell you how much RAM is in the system. What is the total here? 256MB or 384MB?
If you know the make/model of your motherboard, we can look up the specs and find out how much each slot can hold. Sometimes you are limited to 128MB per slot on older motherboards...

Perhaps the 256MB stick isn't compatible with your motherboard. I would consult the vendor you purchased it from to verify that. In the future, buy memory from somewhere like
