I am installing a new scsi hard drive on my sco unix OS5.0.5. The compaq proliant 1500 system came with 3 disk drives (raid 5) and target ids are 0,1,2. The new hard disk target id is 3 and i could see it during boot time by press F9 and entering the utilities. after i ran "mkdev hd" and rebooted the system, the second time the "mkdev hd" gave the error message:

/etc/fdisk: cannot open /dev/rdsk/1s0 for reading: No such device or address (error 6)
/etc/fdisk failed.

There is an entry in my /etc/conf/cf.d/mscsi file as:

cha Sdsk 0 3 0 0

i changed the host adapter number to 1 or the host adapter bus number to 1 and i got the same error info.

By the way, the /etc/conf/cf.d/mscsi doesn't contain the other hard drives information at all. before i added the hard drive, there were only two lines which describe the cdrom and tape drive.

i just couldn't get the divvy screen the second time i ran the "mkdev hd".

Thanks for help!

If you have that drive attached to a raid controller, you need to add it to a raid configuration. I don't think Compaq raid controllers on the 1500 will let you use a single drive as a 'drive'.

The cdrom and tape drive are not attached to the raid (ida) controller, they are attached to the embedded scsi controller. Raid entries do not appear in /etc/conf/cf.d/mscsi and that is why you don't see the drives there.

Use the raid utility to expand your array. You may have to re-load data.

Thanks a lot, Hemo!
This really help me getting out the mys.

I won't be able to expend the array becaus of the big difference between the old disks and the new one. I may have to find a different hard drive to work as a second drive.

Thanks again!

You can also put the new disk in the same scsi chain as the cd-rom and the tape.

Hope This Help
