Hi

I have recently installed IIS on my PC (Windows XP Pro), but after typing in localhost, I am not seeing MS Welcome screen. However, I no error message was given during installion, and the installation was shown as being completed successfully.

Does anyone know what is causing the problem, is it a configuration problem, do I need to adjust or reconfigure something?

Please advise!

Regards

Look at your Hosts file with Notepad (C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc). Add the line 127.0.0.1 localhost and save. Reboot.

Hi MoLaker

Thanks for the email.

Yes, I had already checked the host file, and localhost IP Address was already there.

I am at a lost as to what is going on here. Even reinstalling IIS has made no difference to the situation whatsoever.

Any other ideas??

Start with netstat -a to see if IIS is even listening on port 80.

Hi Smah

Yes, it is on Port 80.

Hi Linney

Yes, I have tried Microsoft, and restarted the webserver. Error messages, I am getting back are "Service Unavailable".

Any suggestions, anyone?

K.R.

If you are using a proxy, make sure IE is set to by-pass it for local addresses.

Hi Linney

Yes, it is Windows XP Professional 64bit edition.

Hi Molaker

No, I am not using a Proxy Server. When I type in 127.0.0.1, this is when I am seeing service not available.

K.R.

Anything useful in those Google links, I notice the first 3 or 4 seem to mention 64bit systems?

Hi Linney

Sorry for the delay in replying, but I was away for a few days.

Yes, I did try the links, which I reviewed, but they haven't managed to solve the problem either.

Does anyone have any other ideas, that can solve this problem?

Have you checked for any third party program causing interference, especially security type programs?

Yes, I have. My AI and Firewall were switched off and I am still having the same problem. There are no other programs that use any web interface or ports.

Antivirus programs sometimes have hidden firewall components is AI (antivirus) that or something else? Things like Spybot S+D come to mind too, if you have that, or anything that might be interfering from a security point of view.

Also apart from the Windows SP@ Firewall, turning a firewall off doesn't always stop the firewall settings in the Registry from still interfering, you may have to uninstall the firewall to eliminate it as a cause.

Anything showing up in the Event Viewer, are any required Services failing to start?

Try Safe Mode With Networking (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

Hi Linney

I have carried out what you have recommended, and even uninstalled IIS 6.0 and re-installed it.

The funny thing is though, that I use Kaspersky Internet Security both on my PC and Laptop. My IIS works brilliantly, but my PC does not.

After re-installing IIS 6.0, and calling localhost, I receive the message, "website under construction", when change the path to call indexo, html or iisstart.asp, I receive HTTP 404, page cannot be found.

There is no database running on this PC, but this should be a problem, because I have Oracle and MySQL running on running laptop and still no problems.

Would the drive letter be the problem? My hard drive letter is "h". Personally, I would be this shouldn't make any difference.

Any ideas??

Regards

Andy

I am fast running out of ideas for you to try, especially as I have never used IIS. I don't think that "H" drive would be a problem, unless something in IIS was coded to use "C", but that seems unlikely.

Have you tested with another user profile, perhaps the Built-in Administrator Account? If it was to work in another account, then perhaps there is some sort of Access or Permissions problem?

How To Reset Security Settings Back to the Defaults

It's been a while since I worked on IIS, but if I remember correctly, by default it places (and looks for) your Web root on C:\(something). Have you examined your Web server settings in the IIS Management Console? That's where you'd need to set your default page to H:\(whatever).

Hi Linney

I have been looking around on the Internet, and note that with my version of XP Professional 64 bit edition that IIS is IIS 6. By default Web Site Extensions are turn off plus a number of other services. Through this I went to IIS Manger and turn on Extensions, but even after enabling these services, I am still seeing error messages such as "Under Construction" and HTTP 404 - "Page cannot be found".

Any new ideas??

Further, before, I found out all of this, took up your suggestion of running chkdisk. No errors were every found, but I am unsure how to disable this on boot up. Can you advise me how to disable this function, please.

Thanks
