Let me start by saying that I had win xp and win 2k working successfully on two 20 GB harddisks. Win XP was installed on C: and Win 2K on D:. Recently I bought a 160 GB harddisk, so I wanted to replace C: hard disk. Then as instructed by Maxtor, I begin formatting and partition the new hard disk. (I still had my D: that is the hardisk with win 2k still plugged, I had replaced the old win Xp disk). Now I encountered some NTLDR missing and finally with Dells support, I finished installing the win xp. On getting into my computer, I had the following in front of me:
the old D: drive was now C:
my CD rom was now d:
and there was only one more hard drive - the new one E:
and the other 2 partitions were missing. I dont know how to retrieve them.

I thought maybe I can retrieve it once I reboot.
There was another surprise for me on rebooting.....It no longer gave me the option to dual boot. That means it was default win xp.

PLEASE HELP ME.

You losted you dual boot boot.ini file. This can be hand edited or fixed useing repair Concel.
Live with the drive letter changes, not fixable.

Here is my present boot.ini, can this be fixed for the dual boot. If so, how?

[boot loader]
timeout=1
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

Thanks for ur valuable responses

Temporarily unplug everything else. Then try booting the new hard drive. Make sure your new drive is the master on the primary.

Partitions will only be shown once they are formatted.

Heres what i would do in your case.

1) Unplug 2nd Hard Drive
2) Reinstall Windows XP on your Main Drive
3) Once Installed Plug your 2nd Drive Back in
4) Now make sure that the drive letters are correct, if not the do the following.
5) Start > Control Panel > Admin Tools > Computer Management > Click on Disk Management > Right clicking on the Drives on the Left will show you a "Change Drive Letter and Path" option. Use this to make sure your Win2000 drive is D:
6) This same screen should show you your other partitions, right clicking on them will give you a format option. Use this and then you can assign drive letters to them as required.
7) Once this is done follow linneys advice on the Bootcfg command

Now you should be sorted.

I will try gpalmer711 suggestion and I will get back soon to tell you how it went.

Thanks all of you for your responses.

This is a dual boot XP Pro and 2000 Pro, only one HD with 2 Partitions.

[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

Follow Linneys info the man Knows what is is talking about.

A wild guess would be your add to your boot.ini

multi(0)disk(1)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect

Without seeing your setup this is a ??

To look at your boot.ini file, Right click My computer
Properties
Advanced
Startup and Recovery Settings
Edit
Do not change the windows XP line or your system could have booting up trouble.

Thanks guys,

It finally works for me.

I want to especially thank gpalmer711 and Linney.

U saved a lot of groan.

kumar
