Hello :

****************
Summary: How do we add a record for when the website is hosted by 3rd party provider?. Assuming that ip address for that provider 10.0.0.1
****************

*********
Explanation:

I have my own DNS server and our website is hosted by some other 3rd provider.and the ip address for the provider is 10.0.0.1(lets assume).

I created a host (A) record for 10.0.0.1,and then added CNAME for the same.

But this works fine, but a host (A) RR is being created for the ip address of the DNS server with FQDN as my domain name.Once this record is created, by earlier CNAME
assumes the IP address of DNS server..and returns a page "Under Construction".

This is driving my crazy.Did some research and couldnt find any answer

Thanks,
Raj

I don't understand? What does point to? An 'A' record or a CNAME?

It would help if you give us the domain name to check.

All you need to have is something like:-

IN A 111.222.333.444

where 111.222.333.444 is the IP address of the web server. Or, if the web server has a host name already with the hosting company of say websrv.hostcompany.com then you could have:-

IN CNAME websrv.hostcompany.com

Chris..

Thanks for fast response..Ok iam convinced that i should the following entry
in a 111.222.333.44 .

For this to accomplished..I guess i should do following steps
STEP1. Add host record (A)111.222.333.444
STEP2. Add CNAME record for the one i did in the step 1.

But when i am doing the Step1..I Did following steps

STEP1
1.Right Click on the "Forward Lookup Zone"
2.Add a "New Host"
3. This window has three fields
a. Name(Uses parent domain if blank)
(left it blank)
b.FQDN(which is grayed out. and it has mydomain.com)
3. IP Address (which i entered 111.222.333.44)

STEP2:
1.Right Click on the "Forward Lookup Zone"
2. Add a "New Alias"
3. This windows has three fields
a. Alias Name
(Entered b.FQDN(which is grayed out,and it has mydomain.com)
c. FQDN for target host "Browse"
I selected the 111.222.333.444. host from the Browse section

But here is what is happening afterwards. There is also another default host entry (A) for mydomain.com with 66.x.x.x.
I guess every time the zone reloads or updates, the aliasname is getting pointed to 66.x.x.x

So how should i glue 111.222.333.444. all the times?

Thanks, a lot

I don't run a Windows DNS server, only a BIND server so I can't say what process you should use for doing this. But, I am confused by this statement.

"Ok iam convinced that i should the following entry
in a 111.222.333.44."

Providing this this is the address of the web server then yes, an A record should do it.

"For this to accomplished..I guess i should do following steps
STEP1. Add host record (A)111.222.333.444"

So, you add a host 'www' and point it to the correct IP address.

"STEP2. Add CNAME record for the one i did in the step 1."

Why? Why do you feel the need for a CNAME record when you are creating an A record that should work okay?

Chris.

Chris..

You are right.I was having an additional CNAME for A record. So it messed up everything. Now it seems to be good.

Really appreciate your cooperation.

Thanks,

My pleasure.
