Hey

I've got a problem with fixing a corrupted Cisco VPN Client (v4.8.01.300) and a desire to update to the latest version.

This is what I've done thus far.

- tried installing 'over the top' (using VPN Client Software for 2000/XP - InstallShield "vpnclient-win-is-5.0.0340-k9") but return the error; "The Cisco Systems VPN Client installation has detected that an MSI based Cisco System VPN Client is installed. Please uninstall this client before continuing with install.

- looked for the uninstall program in Add/Remove programs. It is not there.

- I downloaded "The Windows Installer Clean Up Utility" but this does not list the Cisco VPN Client.

- began uninstalling the program manually as directed by
but this destroyed my network and I had to rebuild my TCP/IP stack (using "WinXP CD") and WinSock (using "WinSock XP Fix.exe")
NB I was unable to complete part of step 6 "The Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) enumerations of the dne2000.inf and dne2000.pnf files. The OEM enumeration .inf file is a file called oem<some numeric value>.inf. For example, files could be called oem2.inf and oem2.pnf." as I had no idea with oem*.inf to delete as I have over 80 oem*.inf in my Windows directory.

- I was able to delete manually the Cisco VPN network connection by uninstalling the device in "network connections".

- I am still able to access the client via Explorer - Program Files but am unable to establish a connection or set MTU (stating the program is not installed).

- I finally re-tried installing the older Cisco VPN Client (VPN Client Software for 2000/XP - Microsoft Installer vpnclient-win-msi-4.8.01.0300-k9) but no success.
The installer begins its process (with the screen windows flashing a couple of times with the installer briefly flashing in the "notification area" on the task bar.
I have noted that a process called "msexec.exe" appears 3 times in "Windows Task Manager" and then drops back down to 1 with no further progress.

- I also tried to installing a different package of the latest Cisco VPN Client (VPN Client Software for 2000/XP/Vista - Microsoft Installer vpnclient-win-msi-4.8.01.0300-k9) with a similar outcome.

I am using WindowsXP (all patches installed)

So what's next peoples

Well, first off, painstaking as it may seem, you could have opened each oem*.inf file and it would have given you a clue as to what it is, I would think. Also, it clearly states the dne2000.inf and dne2000.pnf files---if they are not in the drivers or inf folders in system32, then don't worry about it. If all files are deleted from the registry, then you can do a search for, say dne. One last thing you could do is System Restore. Then reinstall the earlier version (WITHOUT all the bugs).

Got it sorted now.

The problem must have been the oem*.inf files.

Thanks for your help, Burt

scarletpimp, do you mind posting what you did to solve this. I'm experiencing the exact same problem and also did the exact same steps you did to no avail. Thanks

I completed the uninstall as detailed in

How to Manually Uninstall the Cisco VPN Client 3.5 and Later for Windows 2000 and Windows XP

Note in Point 6
The Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) enumerations of the dne2000.inf and dne2000.pnf files. The OEM enumeration .inf file is a file called oem<some numeric value>.inf. For example, files could be called oem2.inf and oem2.pnf.

This involved searching through each of the oem*.inf files (there were 87 of them) for the text string that noted the value dne2000.

I was able to do an explorer search which checked for "containing text" which narrowed down the search.

Once the files were deleted, I was able to reinstall the latest version.

Hope that helps
