We are starting to install 4621SW IP phones. We have two intial sets that work fine. The next batch of phones we recieved, the first three out-of-the-box do not work.

When plugged in, it runs through DHCP, then ultimately times out on the TFTP. It displays "TFTP File not found."

We never get * prompt to enter manual configuration like we do with first three phones. The new & old phones both seems to have the same BIN file and file size.

Any suggestions?

Is your TFTP server external or is your 87XX server acting as the TFTP server?

Well, there is your problem. Only the S8300/S8400/S8500 support TFTP, the S87XX does NOT support TFTP downloads, only HTTP/HTTPS through ports 81 and 411.

Setup an external TFTP server, modify your Option #176 string on your DHCP Server, and try again.

My mistake.

We are not using any TFTP server for downloads. It is my understanding that the phone has the BIN file preloaded.

We have two phones that boot up without the need of a TFTP server. These two phones allow us to manually enter our PBX's IP address at the * prompt when it it looking for the TFTP server.

The new phones never let us get to the * prompt. They sit at the "TFTP error. FILE NOT FOUND" prompt for a time until it reboots.

mikeolson1971, how did the firmware get into the phones? There is a new release for 4600's series, R2.887, out only a few weeks ago.

You need to setup the proper DHCP environment and TFTP Server, so you can download the 46xxsettings.txt file, and setup the options for your phones. you can't count on someone else doing this for you, or some type of "out of box" configuration working.

Hello, I am working with mikeolson1971, and we have downloaded the appropriate 46xxsetting.txt file. We are still having issues getting the phones to point to the TFTP service that is running on my laptop. Can I manually change the TFTP setting on the phone somehow?

Plug in the phone and then press * to change setting when prompted, then type in the IP address of your laptop running TFTP at the file server field. You should start the TFTP service on your laptop so you can actually see the phone getting the downloads.

That is what we tried to do from the beginning. We never get the * prompt option to enter the manual configuration option.

Here is the sequence of items that are displayed on the LCD screen

Initializing
loading a20d01b24.bin 2024 kb
starting (blank screen 10 second delay)
100mbs ethernet (blank screen 10 second delay)
DHCP 3 Sec (blank screen 10 second delay)
TFTP
FILE NOT FOUND
then reboots

We never get the * prompt for manual configuration

I forgot to add that after a bit of waiting with the
TFTP
FILE NOT FOUND

I get the following message that scolls accross the top
Contact DHCP/TFTP administrator, L2Q params in option 43/176 or xxx, SCR script file have looping conditions

you are probably going to have to setup a DHCP server, and setup Option # 176, which will give the phones an IP address, tell the phone the CLAN or Processor Ethernet to register to, and give the phone the IP of the TFTP server to download the firmware and 46xxsettings.txt file from.

You can run a DHCP server on almost anything, however, you need one that can give out "Site Specific Options" (option #176, #242, etc) for IP phones. Windows Server 2000, Windows Server 2003, etc, or even linux can all do this.

if you can't get into the phone manually, you have no other choice than making DHCP work.

Oh and btw, sounds like these maybe used phones, and they have invalid parameters setup in them, hence "Contact DHCP/TFTP administrator, L2Q params in option 43/176 or xxx, SCR script file have looping conditions" that is not good.

They are refurbished phones from an authorized reseller. Any sugestions?

Yes, setup a DHCP server, and see if you can gain back control of the phones again. If you can't, send them back to the reseller, and buy some new phones.

I have a valid DHCP server on my domain. I serve up over 10,000 address. These phones never get to that point.

Do you have Site Specific Option #176 setup, on the DHCP Scope you are using for these 4600 series phones? You have the "TFTPSRVR=x.x.x.x" pointing to your TFTP server? If that is the case, it sounds like the phones are too far broken to be fixable, from the sound of it... they might be in a particular VLAN from where they came from, or have other misconfiguration issues. If you had the password for the phones, and you could get in, you could do a "clear", but if you can't get into the phones, I would just send them back. BTW, its pretty much always a bad idea to buy used IP phones, as you can see. This is not the first case on this forum of someone not being able to use second hand IP phones.
