problem trying to runa cgi script

Hello

I just installed Fedora Core 5 on my PC and I'm trying to setup a webserver and run a cgi script but when I try to run the script instead of having the web browser server run the script it prompts me if I wish to open the sctipr in a text editor or save it to the disk. Can anyone let me know what I need to do in order to have this script run? The permissions are set as 755.

Do your configuration files contain the appropriate ScriptAlias, AddHandler, & Options ExecCGI directives?

Your scripts should all be under one directory. Then use the ScriptAlias directive for this directory. See how apache has done the cgi-bin directory in httpd.conf. Apache will assume that everything in this directory and all its sub-directories are scripts and will parse them as such. If you plan to run cgi outside of this directory, then you will need to tell apache the file extensions the scripts have such as .cgi and .pl. To do this you will need to use the directive smah suggested which are the Addhandler and ExecCGI directives.

Hello I looked into my httpd.conf file and noticed that the AddHandler line for cgi scripts was commented out. Everything else seemed OK. I uncommented it and restarted the server and then tried to run the script again and got the same behavior (i.e. Firefox asks me if I want to save the file or open it in a text editor) I figured it might be easier if I posted the contents of my httpd.conf file and maybe you could tell me if anything doesn't appear right in it. Again I greatly appreciate your help!!!

I tried creating a simple PERL script that just prints TEST out on the screen and when I call it this is the error message I'm getting. I thought this might help

A 500 error means pretty much what is says. The server could not perform the request made by the script. Usually this is a bad scripting such as a bad function call. In the case of a simple "hello world" script, there shouldn't be much that can go wrong as long as the shebang is being read. Are you using a plain text editor to write these scripts? Sometimes if using other than a pure text editor, you can get some funky characters that don't belong. You can't see them in most cases but they are there. Another possibility is that you have transfered them from a Windows machine to a linux machine and again, you may get the funky chars. This is rare these days however. Transfering ascii files in binary mode could do this too. The last thing I can think of is to check to see if .cgi and .pl ar in your mimetypes.

One more remote possibility - make sure that the filesystem permissions aren't preventing things from happening the way they should (apache can read the /cgi-bin directory & hello world file, etc.)

Hi Guys,

I wrote the script in VI so there shouldn't be a problem with extra chars in the file. I did check the permissions before on the file and they were set as 755. the cgi-bin dir is also 755 I believe. I'll check again when I return home. As for the error log, where are these stored?

Well I checked the error log and below is the message I found. Now keep in mind that I'm getting a message asking me to save the file so I don't know why it's complaining that it can't find the file.

Could you post your script? Have you tried any other scripts? Do you get the same error messages and the same message in the logs when you do? The error message isn't saying it can't find the script. I believe it's telling you it can't find the perl/cgi interpreter.

That message indicates it can't locate the interpreter to run the script.

In my experience the problem has been the wrong line ending type after the shebang line. And it has been a painful experience!

If the shebang line ends with \r\n instead of \n you will get this error.

Logging onto the console and cd to the cgi-bin directory and running as ./myscript.pl should give the same error. Running as /usr/bin/perl myscript.pl would likely succeed
