I am having problems setting up a tcpip printer on
sco openserver 5.0.2 We are upgrading to 5.0.6 soon
and we don't have any doc from the person who set the
system up. The printer is an HP laserjet and we can
ping it and actually print to it through telnet. We
need to configure a spooled printer to print to it.

we added the printer to the /etc/hosts file.

we cannot figure out what to do next

thanks for the help

If you have no remote printers set up on the server you will have to do a makedev rlp after completing this you will have to do a rlpconf and add the printer then you will have to edit the /etc/printcap file and change the rp="printername" to rp=text

I suppose it´s a networked printer with a built-in NIC?
run Scoadmin and add the printer through "printers - Hp Network Printer Manager".
choose option 6 in the menu that starts.
choose the spooler destination name (whatever you want to call it)
network peripheral name (ip or in your case the hostname in /etc/hosts)
choose HPLaserJet in the next option (should work with all HP-laserjet products)
next option just click enter.
select it as default printer if you like.
it will then add your printer (change permissions, tell the printer to accept jobs and enable it) and restart the printer services.

Finished.

This is how I do it on our SCO Openserver 5.0.5 and since 5.0.6´s only difference is updated patches it should work for you as well.
