We have three HP printers, 5Si/MX, 8000N, and the 4100DTN. I have been trying to print a greeting card that is thicker then the normal paper and the texts doesn't appear to be black enough. It seemed that the texts get lighter in the middle of the page and darker on the left. It is fine when printing on a regular paper.

Any suggestion is greatly appreciated!

Get different paper. We've had to experiment with lots of different cardstocks to find something that was truly laser compatible.

Yes, go to hp.com, go to support, and type in a model. You'll be able to view the user guide, which I hope will reveal the paper types these models will take.

P.S. Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

Increasing the density when printing these cardstocks might help, as well as chosing the manual tray for input and selecting heavy as media in the paperhandling menu of the printer.

Thanks for responding. I have tried all that. It doesn't work. We don't want to change paper type because we already have thousands of cards made.

Different trays handle weights of stock. I think on the 5si, tray 1 can handle up to 60#, but other trays can only handle lighter stock. A user manual should explain this.

We ended up changing card stocks. I did go back to my notes, and the only other suggestion I can make is to look for the little grey levers on the fuser and lift it 'up' if it isn't already. (You open the side access door to get to it) and see if it makes a differenc. Good luck!

Yes, I've tried the lever thing and it doesnt solve the issue. Anyway, I found that the card stock paper was 80 lbs. Now, I'm not sure if this is the same thing is bond or not...but is 80 lbs something the 5si or 8000N printer can handle?

email me your fax number to nospam at r e s i dot c o m and I can fax you the HP paper specs for 5si, 8000, 8100, 8150 and Mopier products. I'd post a link here, but I haven't been able to find the document on their web site again, although it has to be there.

By the way, can you explain why the 5si and 8000N are not capable of printing anything that is heavier thatn 53lbs but the 4100N prints the 80lbs card stock that we have fine? My understanding is that 5si and 8000N is suppose to be better than the 4100N, isn't it?

ljCharlie

the 5si and 8000 series are actually 'older' than the 4100/4200. We have several stocks that print better on the 4100/4200 series.

I see. So because it was an older printer, it's not capable of printing an 80lbs card stock then.

Well, thanks for all your help.
