Hi

I am new to the site. We havr a problem after Office upgrade opening an .xls file in Office 2010. The message we get when trying to open it is;

name.xls cannnot be accessed. the file may be corrupted or read only 2010

We have copied it locally, tried opening with repair, tried renamming it, the attributes are ok and not read only.

Does anyone have any ideas how to open this without having to purchase software to do this. It is an important file so we dont want to lose it if possible.

Thanks

Have you tried to import it into a new workbook and saving as 2010?

I have had some luck opening corrupt .xls files in OpenOffice.

If you have a copy of the original .xls taken before "repair" attempts, it wouldn't take long to temporarily install OpenOffice or LibreOffice on a workstation, and open it in the calc module. Typically if there is a problem with the .xls file, calc will at least give you a partial worksheet, which you can then save in .xls format under another name.

Whatever calc saves as .xls should be OK in Office 2010.

May or may not work depending on the problem, but it is free.

Hi

Thanks for the replies. I have tried both suggestions already, the import will not work because the file cannot be opened. I tried opneoffice but kept getting a General Input/output errror.

I have also tried various other things from a google search. I downloaded a free repair tool and this shows some data but of course you then have to pay for the repair which I dont want to do. I have extensively searched this site also.

So I think the file is totally coppupt. Thanks anyhow.
