I have a huge problem when loading up my Windows XP SP2, but it has only happened recently (3-4 days ago), so im assuming it is something I have done wrong.

My windows XP simply does not work when loading up, UNTIL the icons for the network connections appear. The problem is that the icons do not appear on their own (even after 30 mins of waiting!!). I have tried going into control panel and loading up the network connections from there, and the odd thing is, once the folder for the network connection has been loaded up in control panel, everything kicks into life. The annoying thing is, it takes almost 15 mins to load up that folder.

I have a sneaky suspicion that the problem is due to me using a program which increased the amount of internet connections from 10 to 50 (as 10 was the default or maximum for SP2). I used this program, after a reccomendation on a Shareaza forum to increase my download speeds, after that, however, the problem began. Nevertheless, I had previously used that program 3 months ago to increase the network connections and I had no such problem. I can no longer find that program, and I believe the problem is something more, because there is no reasonable explanation for what is happening.

I have scanned my registry, done virus and spyware scans, using different programs and methods, but the problem still occurs. Hibernating my computer and then restarting it from hibernation, which I tried yesterday, has the internet connections still on, so the computer had no problem starting up. But shortly after loading from hibernation, my computer began to make some very disturbing noises, as if there was a blender inside rather than a fan. . .?! Naturally I turned off the computer, (illegally, it wouldnt turn off normally), and restarted the computer. The problem of the network connections were still there.

My computer has recently been extremely slow when shutting down, and generally, with gameplay and multitasking, has been considerably slower. I doubt it is a problem with my registry, or spyware/adware/viruses, as I mentioned before, I had done numerous scans. I also doubt it is my hardware, I have a 3.4GHz Intel Processor, 3.5 GB DDR RAM and over 50GB free hard drive space still on my computer. . . I dont know what to do, and I have no idea whatsoever what the problem is. This problem has only happened RECENTLY and I have been through everything, installed files, history etc but I can think of no possible explanation. Thank you very much!

Just a little info:

127.0.0.1 to 127.255.255.254 are all LOCAL HOST, so any entries with those IP's in front are totally safe... and should not slow down the PC at all...

My HOST file contains some 5000+ entries, blocking all those bad sites...

PS: I use both SpyBot S&D and SpywareBlaster to inoculate my PC, aswell as to adding to my HOST file, listed domains that may be detrimental to the safe operation...

Hi,

You might also be interested in getting a different DNS server that filters out those nasty websites.

I'm not that interested in censoring the www, but unfortunatly it does screw up your PC if they go to sites that are unsafe. Kids will be kids, and they will find porn if they want to.... internet or no internet.

Spybot S&D is a nice little prog that will block some sites silently.... No barking ;)

Also, have you set up limited user accounts for your children? Don't let them (or anyone else you might let use your PC) use the PC on a full admin account, for there lies trouble!

There is a free DNS provider at that you can configure to block adult sites, or particular domains if you so require. I have not tried the service beyond the free DNS servers, so I can't tell you how good it is at blocking stuff..... Although an inventive child will always find a way around a simple fix! It will save you having software running on the machine to block the sites though.

I would be interested to hear from anyone who has tried the opendns system as to its usefulness, as I am thinking of using it with my customers who have concerns regarding their childrens surfing habits. I have no children so I'm not bothered! I do live in a shared house though with my friend and his son. His daughter who is very young visits, and I was thinking of using the restricted DNS on the router and leaving the household PC on DHCP and letting the other machines use my DNS server (unrestricted) to access what they like.

Is it worth it?

Regards,

Rob.
