Trying to install on Windows XP. Hangs up while "WRITING MULTIHLP.PAK". I noticed that the cd cover states "Supports Windows 95 & Windows 3.1. Will it install under XP?

The Gipper2 here.I've installed VDB 5.5 under all of the MS systems and presently use it on XP pro. Downloaded most of the updates to make 5.5 into 5.7 but am having problems with the deploy under 5.7. May go back to 5.5 all togather. There is a deploy fix for 5.7 and am waiting to register so I can download it. Sorry I can't answer your mo install problem. If you have 5.5 on an old computer you might try the transfer systems option in XP to move it from the old to XP>

Thanks Gripper. Donated last computer, so can't try transfers. I've tried about everything, including running from command prompt after "F8" boot and attempting to install on other drives. Guess it just won't install on my XP Home Edition.

I wanted to further investigate it as an alternative to Clipper. I've been using Clipper for years and have tried every xbase product I've found as a replacement. My code is very involved and relies upon multiple indexing and complex recursive functions. (I write calendar based cost/schedule analysis programs that utilize Primavera, SAP cost data, etc. Everything else I've tried gets too involved with screen properties and product specific requirements. Most work ok with simple database relationships and structures, but fail to support multiple indexes and dynamic relationships based upon data.

I've written some "C" routines to run in graphics mode, but haven't been pleased with the results. Also, most of the xbase graphic products involve required subscriptions, etc. My only real desire has been to run Clipper with the look and feel of Windows due to misunderstandings with some Clients with DOS based programs. They don't have a clue about how the programs work, but are all experts with the use of "real programming" (Excel and Word). Quite frustrating when I'm hired to control multi-billion dollar projects involving 100's of 1000's of interrelated records from numerous sources!

Thanks again.

Although the installation hangs up (I've given up trying to install), the process leaves a couple of routines that interfer with booting up my system. I am getting messages that registeration programs cannot be found when I restart the computer. As I cannot install the system, how do I get rid of these?

Nicksteel;

I just noticed this post, sorry this is late. I've been programming for years in Clipper and sicne 1999 have switched to Clip4Win with Clipper 5.3b. This combination creates very stable 16 bit programs that I have run on NT4 and W2000 networks as well as all manner of stand alone PC's. I noticed you said you wrote in "C". The conversion to Windows should be fairly easy for you then. Just as long as you're not a "real programmer in Excel and Word" :)
