Problem installing Java (Sun)

I am having problems getting Sun Java to work. It downloads O.K., but when I try to validate the installation it fails. And when I try to use it, I get an image that looks like a small white box with a small red x in upper let hand corner. My OS is XP Home with Sp2 installed. any help will be greatly appreciated.

If so, go into Add/Remove programs and uninstall the JRE component. Then go to Internet Options in IE, click Settings, and finally View Objects. Delete any of the Java components that are left over. Clear cache, reboot, then go back to the link above and reinstall it.

for the download and then followed your instructions and still have the same problem. Any more suggestions?
