I've built a website for my company and had it running fine. the problem is that i have installed a news script to create a news page and headlines on the homepage. to make it work i had to rename my index.html to index.shtml. now when i type in the domain address i get the tree directory of the site rather than my index.shtml file. how do i resolve this without using a redirect script?

You do this in the Internet Information Services on the web server. Select the web site, right click it and choose Properties. In there, you want the 'Documents' tab. That will allow you to add your index page name to the list and, if you want, move it to the top of the list.

thanks for the reply - not sure how to do as you say though. the site is hosted by bt, i've searched their support etc but there is no mention of the internet information services, is it possible they may lock access and i'm going to have to email them and wait for them to make the change?

IIS is what Windows-based web servers run. What operating system is your web host using?

You need to contact your web host to have them include index.shtm, index.shtml, default.shtm, and default.shtml as default pages.

If they won't do this, or you can't get a hold of them, you could make your index page either an ASP page or PHP page, depending on what scripting the web host provides.
