Problem creating virtual directory 1

I'm trying to create a virtual directory in IIS 4 called "intranet". I want the virtual directory to be contained within the "default website" within IIS. The problem is, when I try to create it there, it automatically renames it to "intranet2". When I try to rename it back to "intranet", it tells me that there already exists a folder with that alias. But there is no virtual directory by that name. I even tried completely deleting the "intranet" folder so that there is no virtual directory or even a folder with the name "intranet". I still get the same message saying the the alias already exists. Maybe there is a virtual directory with that alias buried somewhere else, but I don't know where to find it. Can you do a search for a virtual directory in IIS?

Can anyone help me figure out what's going on here?

Thanks!

If i were you I would start by searching the C or D drive for intranet

I already tried that before I tried to create the virtual directory and found nothing. Any other ideas?

Hmm Let me look into this, I know you have looked but it must be there.
Try the registry do a search in regedit.

I just looked at the registry, and I'm not exactly sure what to look for, but I didn't find anything pointing to "intranet" anywhere on the HD of the server. There are several occurences of the word intranet in the registry, but they all appear to be default IIS entries.

Have you checked in the system32 IIS or DNS files if it is not there I would either call it WORKINTRANET or uninstall IIS and reinstall it .
If this is a practical thing to do.
Sounds like IIS has got tied up somewhere I will look into it..
Give me a while.

I think if you bounce IIS and then create the virtual link it should work.

Let me know if this helps

If you mean start/stop the services or bounce the server, already tried that and no dice. Any other ideas?

Hello!

Change the IP address for INTRANET. iis_guru@yahoo.com

It doesn't have it's own ip address. It's a part of the default website and I was asked to make it a virtual directory so that we could assign permissions to it. I'm sort of an IIS newbie, so I'm trying to figure this out as I go.

Hi!

Are you facing the same problem if you change the name of virtual directory? iis_guru@yahoo.com

Do you have a folder under named intranet? Is there a directory under 'Default Web Site' named intranet? If you create a folder under named intranet, you will not be able to create a new virtual directory and point to this folder, because any directory created under is added to the 'default web site' automatically.

If you did have a folder created under named intranet, then deleted it, it is possible NT still thinks it's there. The only way to be sure is to flush the server by rebooting.

If you exhast all suggestions in this thread without reinstalling IIS, and don't want to reinstall IIS, you can look into checking the metabase, but be warned, you screw up while editing the metabase, your web server is hosed. The metabase in IIS is where all information like virtual directories is stored, not the registery of the OS.

A good place to start with information regarding making Metabase changes for someone who doesn't have much experience with IIS is
Remember, read everything before proceeding, editing the Metabase on an IIS webserver is a quick way to create a disaster should you make a mistake.
