Hi,

I am using fedora core 6 as OS, I find II problem when trying adding new users.

When I add a user, I can't get the /var/spool/mail file for that user.

The adduser command pass without problem, and the user can log with ssh.

But I must add the user file in the /var/spool/mail , so he can get emails.

what is this problem is due to.

thanx

Usually this file is created when the user receives his first email. If this is not happening, you may want to look at the directory permissions. The owner should be set to root, the group set to mail and permissions set to 775.

thanks RhythmAce,

I confirm :
the owner is root
the group is mail
permissions set to 775.

The problem is that I am using squirrelmail (with dovecot) and when the user logs he got an error (invalid mailbox).

and when I creat the user file in /var/spool/mail the user can logs normally and send adn receive emails.

That would make sense. The the mailbox (user file) doesn't exist then the pop3/imap server will not see it and return that error. When mailbox gets created by incoming mail or when you create it maually, the pop3/imap server now has something to see. Squirrelmail acts a lot like a mail client in that it looks for the pop3/imap server and requests the mail using the user/password information provided. It then creates yet another mailbox using a database server such as mysql for that user. You have a couple options. You can create and send a welcome email to the new user when their account is created or just keep doing what you are and create the mailbox manually. In my opinion, I think it would be better if there were a welcome letter in there for test purposes.

HI RhythmAce,

I am seeking the cause of the problem, because of other linux version RH (7,8,9 ,FC1...4) I didn't get this problem?

I didn't find any error in log files, and the exit value of the adduser command is 0 (no error).

Strange.

Hi Lemme2004,

I confirm what RA is saying. I normally initialise my users through a script that creates the user, passes the password, creates the samba user and sends a brief email using the mail command
something like

echo "First Contact from ROOT" | mail -s "First Contact" username

If I could have sex each time I reboot my server, I would definitely prefer Windoz over Linux!
