I am setting up a new ACS R7 and am having issues connecting with the PC Administration software.
Connected the R7 into a 5 slot carrier powered on no problem, have a green light etc. With phone on ext 10 programmed remote admin password. Connected a standard Cat5 networking patch cable to the Admin port on the R7 and have that plugged into a 355AF then to a standard DB25M/DB9F serial cable finally going into Com1. Running XP and the latest PC admin software from the avaya site. When trying to connect and choosing COM1 it then sits there for a couple of seconds and comes back with "Can not Connect. 1) Check that the port exists on your PC. 2) Check that another application is not using the port and that the port is configured. If the port is in use, close application and retry"

I have done all those things and still have the same problem.
I have tried this on a laptop running XP and a tower running XP with the same results. Is there something I'm missing here? BTW there are no PCCards plugged into the ACS unit.

Hi toxmox,
It sounds like you should be okay. I have connected using XP and Win98. Your problem is not that there is no PC card, and I will often use a CAT-5 cable. Make sure the cable is straight through, not a crossover. The only other thing I can think of is that you may have a modem cable.

I have tried numberous straight through patch cables. Even crimped and cable tested a new one just in case and still no go. I've tried everything I can think of. I thought maybe I missed some sort of initial setting besides the remote admin password that I need to do on the R7 first to let it connect or something. Is there a way to test the connection via Hyperterminal or some sort of diagnostics I can do here?

Thanks for the response BTW.

Hi toxmox,
I think your CAT-5 cable is okay. I am wondering about your DB9 to DB25 cable. After setting the password, you are all set. As for hyperterminal, I don't know, I have never tried it on the ACS R7.

Ah...Thanks for the tip. I had a spare adapter laying around with the same ends as the AT cable and I tried it and it worked. Thanks again.
