For some reason I cannot make a connection with my tftp server! I am using SolarWinds...

This is hilarious... I know that I am overlooking something and maybe one of will catch it! Thanks all!

I am wondering if this is due to a configuration issue.. It is strange that I can ping everything from my PC but cannot ping the PC or TFTP Server from the Router! The TFTP Server is set to ALLOW ALL SEND AND RECEIVE! Have a test to take now but I will play with it again later! I seriously don't know what I am overlooking! LoL

This is the main reason that I decided to buy a lab! LoL

By the way, I will share this with everyone.. On Vista you may have to "Right-Click" on SolarWinds TFTP Icon and choose Run as Admin! Otherwise it will not start the TFTP Server when you try to!

Thanks All!

Managed to finally get it!

USED:
Router(config)#tftp-server flash:c3640-i-mz.122-28c.bin

To accomplish this I had to download PumpKIN and use it as a TFTP client making the router the server.. LoL

I still do not understand why it won't work the other way! And why I cannot ping the PC from the router!

maczen,

Copy your config (clear passwords) for us to review!

Your topology would help so we can see what is hooked to what!

I have no trouble at work with TFTP -

Code:

TFTP is 192.168.10.11

I can hit the TFTP from any of the 3 routers and the 2 switches.

Hope this helps!

Yes as always that is most helpful CiscoGuy; however, in this case I have traced the problem to one specific issue! I am an idiot! LoL I grabbed a regular straight-through cable instead of a crossover when I was setting it up!!! A mistake that I WILL NEVER make again!!! LoL The strange thing is that PumpKIN let me grab the file from the router even though I had the wrong cable.. (After I set the tftp-server flash:xxxx) That combined with the fact that I could ping the router had me looking elsewhere! (Configuration stuff like no service config)....

The good thing is that this was a learning experience! Although I do feel about two inches tall at the moment! LoL

maczen,

I once had a student come get me in my office - he said he could not connect to the routers in the lab/classroom !

I walked into the lab - flipped the power switch on the leg of the rack and 5 routers and 3 switches came to life and I might say that when you have 8 fans spinning in a noiseless classroom those 8 pieces of network equipment make a lot of racket!

I turned to the student and said "I bet you will never wonder why the first line in every repair book is to make sure it is plugged in!" We both laughed about it - but he never made that same mistake twice!

Same for you - you will check the cables first - always start troubleshooting with the simplest things first! You will never forget!

That's for sure! I just ordered a bunch of Cat5e cables from cablesandkits.com ... Hey Ciscoguy33.. I was just going through their site and I will be honest... I am lost when it comes to the difference between some of the cables and which ones to buy.. I will post the NM/WIC's as well as the cables I am going to buy and hopefully you can save me from spending $50 on the wrong Octal Cables etc...LOL

maczen,

Go to - I have bought from him many times (he is in Hong Kong) he has a great website and it is very easy to see what cable you need for what module!

Heard a bunch of CCIEs at a Cisco Networkers convention talking about buying all their stuff from Anthony Panda - cked it when I got back to my hotel room - almost all Cisco stuff - good prices!

Even if you do not buy - tou will learn the cables!

Thanks...Looking at it now... Just found a lot of three 2924's on eBay for $36.. I went ahead and bought them for that price... No DOA.. Even if a few ports are bad you can't beat that price... That way I can buy some 2950's later when I am to the switching portion of the CCNP.. Everything else will be setup and I may even be able to afford a 2960 and 3550.. LoL I get VERY into technology!

I was wondering...If I buy an 851W and use that as my "internet" router.. Can I buy an Cisco Access Point and simulate a WAN? (The 851 on one side and the AP plugged into one of my other routers on the other) I was looking at the specs of the 851 but didn't really know what "bridging" technology would be necessary if any.. or if I would just set it up like a normal wireless setup..

Anyway, thanks for the link!

maczen,

Not really sure what you are trying to do with the 851W?

To simulate a WAN you can use back-to-back serial cables, if you want to get more involved you can get a network module with the multi serial ports and turn one of the 3640 routers into a Frame Relay switch (I like 2520,2521,2522 or 2523 for this).

I have even bought 2 used Adtran CSU/DSU on eBay connected them back to back with a cable and then ran the serial cables from the routers to the CSU/DSUs.

I bought 2 T1 WICS on eBay that came with a rollover cable to connect the 2 routers so they thought they had a connection between them.

You can even buy a ISDN sim unit (not cheap) and do ISDN between the routers with the right WICS!

Many ways to fake a WAN connection!!!

I am having the same problem that I was having before... Thought that the crossover was the fix..

Any and all assistance would be greatly appreciated.. LoL
I can't believe this is kickin' my butt! But I am REALLY overlooking something here!

interface Ethernet2/0
ip address 192.168.70.2 255.255.255.0
half-duplex
Likely a duplex mismatch.

router(config)#int e2/0
router(config-if)#duplex auto
or
router(config-if)#duplex full
Also, this statement
ip route 192.168.70.0 255.255.255.0 Ethernet2/0
is goofing you up---that route is already directly connected and is confusing your poor router---it's old enough as it is, no sense in driving it to senility!lol
So...

router(config)#no ip route 192.168.70.0 255.255.255.0 Ethernet2/0

Burt

LoL.. Thanks Burt... Will give it a shot!

That was the problem.. was able to play (back up the IOS) with three of the four 3640's after that..

I definitely need more NM's LoL...

I have a question about the fourth 3640.. It boots into ROMMON by default.. (Can't read flash) in fact it states that there is no flash card present (In slot 0 I believe)... I tried to do a tftpdnld but after I set all of the variables the tftpdnld command was unrecognized... (too old?)

My question is "Is xmodem the next step"?

I was considering removing the flash from one of the working routers and placing it in this one... Would it just boot normally if I did that (And set the conf reg to 0x2102?)...

Thanks again guys.. I am VERY GLAD that I am investing in this lab! I am learning more now from troubleshooting than I ever would have from the books or even GNS3!

Thanks!

Yes, the 3640 is too old for tftpdnld. For XModem or even YModem, you can at least boost the baud rate up to 115,200 for the transfer.

Burt

maczen,

You said - "I am VERY GLAD that I am investing in this lab! I am learning more now from troubleshooting than I ever would have from the books or even GNS3!" that is one thing that all the books and sims can not do - give you hands-on experience with cracking the case and racking the equipment.

As for your trouble - you might have 1) no FLASH 2) bad FLASH 3) Wrong Flash 4) bad MB/ Flash slot

I would try FLASH from a working unit - document everything so that you do not mix the bad FLASH with a known good chip - if FLASH is bad you can config to load the IOS from a TFTP server.

One of my students bought a 2514 on eBay and it had no FLASH - it had been configured to get the IOS from a TFTP server!

Hope this helps!

I checked and there are flash cards in it.. (I am guessing that the two smaller sticks of memory are flash and the two larger are the actual RAM sticks! Just wanted to verify that that was a possible solution (removing from known good and placing in bad)..

The smaller sticks are flash, yes? LoL... Looks like a smaller version of the RAM you would put in a PC!

As far as loading IOS from a TFTP server... That router boots directly into ROMMON.. I looked through both my CiscoPress book and my Lammle and did not see anything covering booting to TFTP from ROMMON..

I will give the flash a shot and if that does not work I know it's one of the slots! (Hope it don't fry my good flash! LoL)
Thanks again Guys!

Problem solved! Sorta! XMODEM to the rescue and one more notch on the experience belt! This is so much more fun now that I have actual equipment to work with! LoL

Ok.. 3640 with 64/16... The guy I bought it from couldn't get an IOS to load on this one! I got c3640-i-mz.120-7.T.bin on it once then lost everything when I tried to upgrade it to c3640-i-mz.124-16.bin... So I had to go back to c3640-i-mz.120-7.T.bin.. (xmodem times 2... that was slightly frustrating.. LoL) Strange because I believe that the router should take that 12.4 IOS!!! (It is running fine on the others!) Makes me wonder what the difference is between the 3640 and the 3640A... and how to tell the difference if it matters... But at this point I am just happy to have a lab to work with and all routers functioning properly! LoL.. (I was worried just a little)!

Now I just need some serial cables, an octal, and some NM's/WIC's... LoL (My switches arrive tomorrow)!

Oh.. Huge question... Where do I buy power cords and is there some specific guage etc.. that I should be looking for? I need two more for the 3640's and I am sure that I will need some for the Catalyst 2924's.. (BTW there was four in that auction not three... Lucky me!)

I just wanted to thank you all for all of your help! Especially CiscoG and BurtB!!! (Sounds like an old-school hip-hop group.. Or a Blues Duo...LoL)

Thanks Guys!

maczen

You said - "Where do I buy power cords and is there some specific guage etc.. " I wish you were near by - at the college we have thrown them away in the past - when you get 100 computers at a time and they all come with power cords - you end up with old power cords everywhere!

You can replace with one from Home Depot or even CompUSA (the new CompUSA online has good prices) -

Any Best Buy/Radio Shack/electronics store should have them for about $5 for replacement computer cords.

You also might want to go to Cisco here and download this PDF - Cisco 3600 Series Routers Hardware Installation Guide

Or here for Upgrading System Memory in Cisco 3600 Series Routers - it shows you what is what inside the case - you had questions about the FLASH and DRAM-

Hope this helps!

Man you are awesome CiscoGuy!
Thanks a million! I know that you were holding your breathe but the 2924's got here today and they all work great.. Had to reset the passwords and can't wait to look at th eold configuration.... Saving that!!! LoL (I'm such a geek!!!)

I see that they support VLAN pruning etc... Awesome!!! Got four of them for $35 (Somehow confused auction with another that was for 3).. All pass POST and have tested all ports on one of them so far!!!

My lab is growing!

4x 3640 three with 12.4 one with 12.0
1x 2610
4x 2924XL

2x NM-1E2W
1x RadioShack USB/Serial (need hacked driver for Vista)
Various CAT5e

Is there a particular direction that you guys would suggest from here.. spending the least amount of mula but to cover the CCNP routing topics? Mostly looking at the NM's and WIC's.. Do you guys have any recommendations? Also.. I read a post where someone said that there was a NM that could turn the 2610 into an access server like the 2511RJ... That would be cool since I have the 2610 already.. Have you heard of this?

BTW I can dig for the info.. Just wondering if you guys have any advice like "avoid this" or "I recommend...".. Thanks for all of the help!!

And thanks CiscoGuy! for the power cord info... I just wasn't sure if they should use the same guage as a PC!!! Awesome!!
