Private/Public IP Address

Can someone please give me a quick explanation of how to determine the public IP of a private IP and vice versa.

Not sure I understand what you mean. If you are talking about using a router in a WAN/LAN environment, the public IP, or WAN address, is the IP address from your ISP. It is usually a routable address and it is what you are known by on the internet. The private IP, or LAN address, is what is assigned either by you or your router's DHCP server. It is usually a non-routable address and is what your computers are known by on the local network. The router handles associating the private IP with the public IP when packets get sent out to the internet or are received from the internet.

u can read some more on private and reserved addresses in RFC 1918...
