I have a customer who needs to have staff in the office join in on calls in progress occasionally. I programmed a button for them with Feature 83. This is supposed to allow them to turn off the privacy feature on a per call basis. They have reported that only 2 other people can jump in on the call when privacy is turned off, but more than 3 people cannot be on this call. This is not a Conference Call, so I am surprised to hear this. It seems that there would be no limit to how many could pick up when privacy is off. What say you??

Actually it is a conference call, just a different way of doing it.

You could just turn Privacy off under lines if they do this all the time.....or use the conference room lol.

Thanks. i really didn't think it was a conference call. i thought as many could tap in as needed. yeah, it's all geeks, a software developer, so they all have to be in front of their desktops. i guess i will just turn of the privacy in general. never needed to do that before. i am sure the line indicator will still show that they are on the line and shouldn't cause any problem. thanks again.

Well, I went back to site and turned off auto privacy on all lines. so when someone else picks up the line, there is an audible indication and the name of the person picking up shows on the display. If another person in the office tries to pick up, they are not allowed. And strangely, there is a buzz on the line that is not there before the second person cuts into the call. Like I said, this is the first time I have used this feature. This will never work. I was under the impression that if there was no privacy on the line that anyone could pick up and the amount of people who could would not be limited. this is a feature i told the customer they could have when they purchased the system and it was of utmost importance to them. Guess I blew that. If they use the conference call feature they will be tying up 3 lines. yikes!

It does say to allow another telephone to join.

Auto privacy
This feature controls whether one Norstar user can select a line
in use at another telephone to join an existing call. The default
setting is Privacy on, so that nobody with a Norstar telephone
can press a line appearance on their telephone to join a call in
progress at another telephone.

Press CHANGE to select the setting: Y (on) and N (off).

Should have been something like
This feature controls whether only up to one other Norstar user can select a line in use...

I had no idea of the limit either.... but then all my clients use the board room

j/k

Forgot to ask again, any idea about that buzz on the line when I took the Privacy feature off of all the lines and picked up on the calls in progress?

Remember that that crap is analog with no system behind it and loops jack to jack, where instead you have a digital phone system created for a business...however appears not created for geeks at home.

I am not going to blame the designers since who would assume this scenario, much like who would assume 30 plus people answering/playing as reception in another thread (BCM restricts Caller ID to 30 per line).

-The buzz sounds not normal.....maybe a trunk card replacement in order as a test (get Global card)?
-The tone and display is normal.

I haven't tried this but what if 1 person conferences 2 people, then one of those other 2 people try to conference? like a daisy chain of conferences.

The privacy feature will only allow 3 parties to join in on a trunk. I found that out many moons ago, granite I haven't used it in sometime but I recall that being the total. It's not like because privacy is off you can turn this into a party line and have 15 people jump on board, only 3. That is the case if you turn off privacy off on trunk programming or by using f. code 83. As for the beep with the name etc. nothing you can do about that either. I believe that is why Nortel introduced the SM feature, you can jump on the line as a supervisor without no beeps or warning.

the way it works is that one party is on the call with an outside caller and two internal users can jump on, with the tone, of course. I recommended that they just use the speakerphone since it is such a quiet and small office if they need others to hear.
SM feature?? I'll have to check that one out.
Thanks.

SM Supervisor
A telephone designated as an SM Supervisor allows you to
monitor Hunt group calls without or without a conference tone
indicator to the other two parties.

Problem is you cannot monitor another Supervisor.
Sounds like you would probably want everyone as a supervisor.

I am curious as to what kind of business they are into.
