priv.edb, pub.edb mysteriously marked read-only/hidden

Several servers on my network occasionally halt their information store services, yielding a long number error code in the event log. I've confirmed that it is not a security issue by removing all the other domain admin accesses and changing the pw's on all the services. The first time it happened, I called Microsoft, and they hadn't a clue why it occurs. The resulution has simply been to unmark priv and pub from read-only/hidden, and restart the services. Are there any functions that could trigger this error?
