printing with netware 5, IP style

Warning, this is a very broad question so any direction to other FAQ's or resources are appreciated!

Basically I want to know if there is a good non-third party solution to setting up macs for IP printing, and _hopefully_ leave the desktop clear of those printer icons! And, what the proper method for setting up printers in an IP environment is.

If you need a sample case: HP4100 printer, iMac os 9, netware 5, no ATPS.

Read on for background info.

I am *trying* to assist in the setup of several (hundred) macs. We have an array of Mac OS 7.6.1-9.1, upgrading our servers to netware 5, and going from atps to IP printing.

Question:
What is the *proper* way to setup macs for IP printing in a netware 5 environment? Using ATPS we have a custom setup where we have removed desktop printing to avoid the many printer icons...and we force the users to actually go to chooser and setup their printers.

now however, with IP printing, the only way i have found to connect to a printer is using the "Desktop Printer utility" that comes with OS 8.6 and up. I feel odd adding system components from OS 9 (desktop printer utility) to our OS 8.1 G3's. Even more odd is adding all of the open transport extensions to OS 7.6.1 just so users can get onto the server...

can you tell we are faking our way into this upgrade?

What is you aversion to printer icons?

Anyway, the 'correct' sequence is:

1.Launch the Desktop Printer Utility.
2.Select "Printer (LPR)" and click OK.
3.In the "PostScript Printer Description (PPD) File" section, click on "Change..." and selectthe PPD for your printer.
4.In the "Internet Printer" section, click on "Change...".
5.Enter the printer's IP address or domain name for "Printer Address".
6.Enter the queue name, if used. Otherwise, leave it blank.
7.Click on "Verify" to verify that the printer was found.
8.Click OK.
9.Go to the File menu and select "Save".
10.Enter a name and location for the desktop printer icon and click OK.
11.Exit the program and you should be ready to print.
