I have HP4050 with Jetdirect located on remote office with DSL connection to the internet. I would like to make this printer available to my Unix server so user can send print job to this printer.

What is the best way to set this up?

Does the remote office have a VPN with your unix server ?

Hope This Helps, PH.

We have No VPN connection, but I can have router accepting connection by open and fowarding between our router network.

Configure the remote router to pass port 9100 traffic to the LAN IP of the HP-LJ4050. Set the HP's default GW to be the LAN side of the router. Set the SCO system to print to the WAN IP of the router.

You will probably have better luck with NETCAT than HPNP.

Make sure the router is passing the traffic by using telnet.

I have C source that will print directly to port 9100 on any
printer capable of accepting 'raw' input. It adds carriage-returns
to line-feed-only delimited files (allowing plain text files to
be printed). It can accept piped input from a 'filter' of some
sort (eg pdf to postcript) using the 'raw' option flag.
Whilst prints to port 9100 do not permit the same amount of
control over the printer as lpr etc, the program can be used
within a standard SCO 'dumb' interface script as if the printer
were 'local'! Source can be downloaded from:
