Hi

I have a user running W2K SP4. They have 2 network printers installed on their PC, the Print server is on the same subnet. When they print anything to the network printers it takes about 45 seconds for the print dialogue box to show up and then a furthur 2-3 minutes for the job to print.

I have pinged the print server and received a response immediately, also pinged printer and received a response immediately.

The user can access files on the same server no problems at all.

Does anyone have any ideas what the problem could be?

Thank you
Tony Wood

Are yu using a Novell Client as well, I am experiencing the same problem since I upgraded the novell client and installed sp4 wondered if they are connected, if you are not running Novell then it points to a possible problem in SP4

Sorry I can't help with this one, it's got me stumped as well

Hi

Not using the Novell Client - just the standard Microsoft Networking components. I am pretty sure that SP4 was on the machine before the problem started occurring.

Thanks

I have managed to eliminate my problem with printing by removing SP4 and reverting to SP3 I know it's not exactly what's required but by eliminating the problem it is easier to look for a solution.

Do we have any updates on this? I think I have a similar problem.

I have peer to peer home network with Linksys wireless router (infrastructure mode running 128 bit WEP). All was working well until a few weeks ago.

Computer 1 is W98 machine with network laser printer - Ethernet connection
Computer 2 is W2K SP4 laptop with network inkjet - Ethernet or D-Link DWL-650+ wireless connection.
Computer 3 is W2K SP4 laptop - no printer - Ethernet or Linksys WPC11-CA wireless connection.
Computer 1 and 2 (wired or wireless) have good response times for file and print sharing with each other and file sharing with Computer 3 (wired or wireless).
Computer 3 (wired) has good response times for file and print sharing, but when Computer 3 goes wireless print sharing goes down the drain (20+ seconds to minutes).
I have interface cards all set for Client for Microsoft Networks + File & Printer Sharing + Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). I have tried NetBIOS, NetBEUI and IPx/SPx Protocols with no help. I followed Q245800 - removal of keys in the registry.

The slowness started around the time that I got high speed internet and decided to catch up on Critical W2K updates with the fear of all the security issues of late. Maybe 28.8 Kb thought processes were smart restraint.

Any fresh ideas?

Maybe it's a good idea to check your DNS settings.. make sure you aren't relying on the printer servers broadcasting their presence on your network. Not the best way to fix, but you *could* put an entry in your hosts file on each of the computers which will help the desktops find the printer servers quicker.

If you're mapping the printer using it's IP address then it shouldn't be an issue either. Most of the time it could be network communication issues such as mismatched duplex, etc.

I am solidly with ChrisEubank on this topic. If there are any DNS issues, every network resource will be slow.

Hi there. I have had a number of Win2k PIIIs working flawlessly for about a month. SP4 is already installed on my image I use to clone from PC to PC. I have had to revert to printing directly to the HP Jetdirect print server instead of through my Win2003 Ent. server share. This is not the best solution in my mind but I have had no choice.

It was working - any ideas as to why it would stop all of a sudden? Will I have to create a new image with SP3 only?
