From Windows XP computers connected to an Novell Network I am having problems printing to a shared HP DeskJet 1220C. The printer performs perfectly from Windows 98 PCs.

On the Windows XP PC's using the latest driver from HP I have the following symptoms:

Install the printer driver and configure as a network printer. As the driver finishes installing it successfully prints a test page. However when I try to print from an application (typically Microsoft Office) the application disappears (no error given), the network reports the job printed (so quickly it cannot be true) and nothing gets printed.

Anyone else successfully linked up one of these?

How did you originally connect to this printer? Did you install the drivers first? If so, I would remove the drivers, browse to the printer on the network, and pick "connect." If it prompts you to install a driver, do so then.

look in the printer propertied under the ports there and make sure that the driver is set to the correct port

also print out a test page from the JD (press the test button), and make sure the info on the sheet corresponds with the port in the printer properties, if you are running a firewall of anysort then shut that off and try again

Riverguy - I have tried installing the full printing system and the add printer version of the driver, uninstalling inbetween. Both do the same.

ShaneOhMac - Port seems to be set up correctly, just points to the network Q. Built in JetDirect and, as I mentioned, works fine from Windows 98 on the same network. Further info - post installation Test print fails causing start bar to dissappear (explorer error?) instead of host application. Definatley seems software related to me.

Windows XP local proxy is off, we have a BorderManager firewall to the internet on the network but can't see how that might affect things.

Can't find anything in the HP support system, yet the problem seems so consistent.

I will load WebJetAdmin on this XP PC and see if I can manage it through that. I suspect I can, but it will make no difference.

:-( Feeling low. Thanks for trying guys.

Had another look at the print server and realised it's an old JD150 (IPX only). I am changing it for a newer one that runs TCP/IP and will then try and connect directly to it rather than via the NetWare Queue.

Hope at last! :)

Success!

Printing directly to the TCP/IP JetDirect works fine. It appears that printing using this driver to a NetWare queue from Windows XP with the Novell Client 4.83 (Patch 1) does not work. I never tried an NDPS set up.

Printing directly to a TCP/IP enabled JetDirect work fine. [wavey]

On WinXP (and W2K and NT) you can set up JetDirect boxes rather easily by creating "Standard TCP/IP Ports" as follows: Port Name: HP (This applies to all devices, port name's always HP). Port Name or IP Address: the_ip_of_the_jd-box_or_printer. Protocol: RAW (default). Protocol Settings: Port Number: 9100 (default). Works fine on small environments, but I wouldn't do this on larger networks. Setting up a print-queue on a über-power-server does the trick better IMHO.

Read the "Commercial Inkjet Printers - Configuring a Microsoft(R) Windows 2000 or XP Client for a Server Running an Older Operating System" issue on HP support.
Setup makes a LAN Manager port. All you need is to print to a local port pointing to your share insted.
