I have an NT4.0 Server with several clients on my home LAN. I lost print capability to the HP LaserJet 4M local to the NT Server to the clients (XP, 2000, and ME). This configuration has worked fine for quite some time but out of the blue, it just stopped. Each of the local clients has an attached printer and each of the clients can still print there. But none of the clients can print to the 4M. All of the clients are patched with current updates.

I am at a complete loss.

we will need more info to be able to give an opinion...
can the clients "see" the hp?
is the router/hub/server functioning correctly?
is the hp printer still funtioning? have you tried to hook the hp up to a local machine directly and print?
are you able to ping the printer from a client?
have your permissions for accessing the remote printer changed on the server?

knoweldge is power, spread the power

The HP4M is not a "network" printer pre-se. It is local to the NT Server and shared out for all clients on my home LAN. The HP4M works when printing directly from the NT4Server. The HP4M doesn't have an IP so it can't be ping'd but from anywhere on my LAN, the NT4Server can be ping'd. I rarely go near the NT4Server so there would be no reason for the permissions to change. I did doublecheck and it is still shared out to all clients by loginid and the ever popular "everyone" account.

The LinkSys BEFSR41 is functioning. It is used for NAT only so I can share the Broadband connection with my LAN clients.

I have not tried to connect the HP4M local to any other computers as they are not in the same room. If I have to, I guess I can pick up the 3ton printer and move it to see.

Be sure to bend at the knees when you pick up your printer ;)

Are the printers still showing as active (not grayed out) when you do Start|Settings|Printers? I would try uninstalling the printer from one of the clients and reinstall it, sometimes this works.

Tried that, but when I browse the network, it shows the NTServer but not the printer attached.

Success...

My printer and network problems are all gone.

I gave up trying to figure out why NT4 Server would go haywire without human intervention so I simply pulled the hard drive (just in case I needed it) and installed another drive and built the box as a Windows 2000 Server.

All my client computers (ME, XP, W2K) and the printers are happy as clams...so am I.

The work effort to download all the updates to W2K Server took longer than the actual build which I did taking most of the default options.

To all those who sent in responses --- Many thanks...ASB
