Hi; I have a Novell 5.1 file/print server. We recently had a hard drive crash and went through a sucessful restore. The only problem has been printing to a HP LaserJet 4 printer. The print screen shows about 1/3 of the job finished but we do not get any output. The "ready" light flashes on the printer so I know it's getting input. Here is the weird thing. If you take out the paper tray (taking the printer off-line) and then re-insert the tray I will print! I think the print driver/spool is corrupt but have no idea on how to fix it. Any ideas? Thanks.

Are you using NDPS or standard NetWare printing? -----------------------------------------------------

Hi TheLad.

We are using standard Novell printing. I had someone else mention it might be poll instead of interrupt configuration. What do you think? By the way I moved the printer so this is not urgent. We would like to have the printer back in it's usual position though. Thanks!

I take it you have it connected to the back of a PC and not connected direct to the network via a JetDirect card? Either way I would advise downloading the latest HP LJ 4 drivers from and installing them as a first port of call. -----------------------------------------------------

Reset the printer back to Factory Defaults, delete the existing Printer Objects for this Printer (i.e. Printer Object, Print Server Object and Prinet Queue Object).

Launch HP's JetAdmin and recreate the Printer. It should work fine after that. You can even use the same Naming Conventions as the Printer used to be.

NOTE - If you use the same name, at least for the Print Queue, you will not have to make any changes at the workstation level because the workstations are already configured to print to that particular Print Queue!

Good Luck.

I almost forgot...

Check the BIOS level of the Printer. NetWare v5.1 is very particular when it comes to HP JetDirect units. According to Novell, the BIOS level should be AT LEAST 8.06 or above.

Good Luck!

I agree, I have spent many an hour upgrading firmware on JetDirects after a NetWare 5 upgrade -----------------------------------------------------
