Hello

Can I print directly from Solaris to the printer which is
connected and configured on the PC running windows?

Thanks in advance

Sharad

yeah of course man donot try to think of anything except SAMBA or WSFTP that is the most useful and most easiest way of trying to access the unix file systems in any cases what ever complex it is
try to download a free or trial version of WSFTP or SAMBA free download by searching thro google.com and install the winnt or the sun system to access the files from the unix boxes and do a direct printing from the NT box
thats the better way of doing things beetter than losing cases and new line characters
ok fine do this and i shall be in touch with u
adn also do tell me what kind of thing su r doing so that we can share things

see u again maaan

Hi,

U can definitely print from solaris box to Windows compatible printer.Follow these steps:
Edit /etc/hosts and add an entry for the printservername and IP address of the network printer.
where printservername is the network name of the printer

lpsystem -t bsd printservername
lpadmin -p prn -s printservername!anyname
where prn=name of printer on solris box
anyname=hplaser or type of printer
lpadmin -d prn (to make prn as default printer)
U should then change the setting in the file /usr/lib/lp/model/netstandard (for formatting)
Hash out this line FILTER=/bin/cat and replcae this entry by
FILTER='/usr/bin/unix2dos'
If this doesn't work then before printing each file u can give the command:
unix2dos sourcefile /tmp/targetfile and then print the target file.

I hope this helps....

Hello Madhav / Navin

Many thanx for the reply.

Both of the options are very useful. But my problem is, some of the printers are connected directly to desktop
either on parallel ports or serial ports (Haa! still we use Dot matrix printers). They do not have separate IP address. In this case, is it possible to use these printers
directly from unix, without doing ftp or sharing the directories thru samba?

Thanks again

Sharad

The desktop hosting the printer can be used as a print server. send all your print jobs to the print server
