I need a printer that will print on smaller pieces of paper efficiently. The paper size needs to go down to at least 3" by 5" and preferably smaller. Does anyone know of a printer that works well with small paper stock?

Actually, any printer should work. The printable size depends on the software. Even Microsoft Word will print "Rolodex" cards. The only difference would be to buy "Pin-Card" stock if you are using a dot-matrix printer.
You can also do Labels with software, that should be small enough!

micker377 is correct. You can buy 8-1/2 x 11 sheets with perforated 3x5 index cards. Check Avery -- they have a huge selection.

We order special card stock for our mainframe printer because we print up some kind of little postcards for the local fish and wildlife license office. Basically we use a form with a logo on it to print the address for a post card.

Do you need color or just black and white?
What kind of volume?

You can buy the sheets of perforated stock as mentioned above, but they tend to be expensive and don't lend themselves to printing 1 card at a time.

I print 3x5 index cards on my Laserjet 5P all the time. You can put up to 10 cards at a time in the manual feed tray. Works pretty well if you only need black and white and low volume.

The Laserjet 5P/6P has a nice strait paper path and works pretty well for smaller media. Being older it's also a little on the slow side (8 pages per minute) which I think helps prevent jams. 3x5 is the minimum recommended media size.

Of course the lj6P is not a current model, so you would have to find a used or refurbished model.

If you want color or a "newer" lower purchase cost model I would look at the Epson C84. It is a nice little ink jet printer and will take stock down to 3.5x3.5 according to the specs. It's also nice and quiet, yet pretty speedy.
