I have a printronix formspro 4503 multiform printer.
This is connected to an AS400 model 720e v4r4 via twinax.
Recently (within last month ) started experiencing the following symptoms - print job will stop in the middle of job and throw a 6140 response code ( lost contact with device ) must power off printer and power back on, then must start the writer again. The printer is constantly printing characters in the wrong position of the print line prior to it being ended prematurely. I thought it was bad data but a reprint of the job will be perfect. This is a truly random situation. Hardware vendor replaced all of the boards on the printer to no avail. Finally replaced entire printer to see if it is a printer problem. Problem still exists, so I am convinced I have a spooler problem, a problem with the twinax line, or a config problem with the controller/writer. Help appreciated. Any ideas?

First thing I would do, is to put a tester on the twinax,, and look at how it is routed..yes the acutal line is routed,,, where. Twinax problems, are usually cable problems,,, Look at the connectors, take them apart, and look at the pins, for good contact,,then reassemble,, and test. Is the AS400, set for auto configuration? You can always end the writter, vary it off, turn off the printer, delete the configuration. Then turn on the printer, to see how it gets configured. I might try that first, to see how it reactes,, before working on the cable.

As a followup to anyone who is interested...
A solution has been found. It seems that I had a bad port on the twinax hub (a daisy power panel plus ) but only an intermittent one. Solution - moved to a new port and blew away the existing printer configuration, then let the as400 autoconfig the printer, then changed printer specific parameters. Thanks for the previous help.
