printer port

I have a copier/printer Mita Ai3030 connected to the network, I can ping the printer from any computer (is connected with a network card) but I cannot see it so when I install the drivers in my computer I can not select that printer to print on.
I only get the options of COM1,2,3, or LPT1,2,3

make sure that you are installing a "network" printer when you are using the wizard. Is this a stand alone printer, or is it shared?? What operating system are you using?

It will be a shared printer once is install, my computer is win 98.
i do try to install network printer but the problem is that i dont see it in the network but i can ping it

How is your name resolution set up? Try using the IP address of the printer, instead of the netbios name.

If I understand you right, you have just set up the printer and configured an IP on the printer itself (not via a computer).

Add the printer and choose local printer. Go ahead and choose a local port(LPT1). Finish the setup. Now after you have it installed, open up the "properties" for the printer..go to "details".."add port" (here, enter the ip address that is configured for the printer). Hit "ok".

Send a test page.

Yes i did configured an IP address on de printer.
if i enter the IP address on the "add port" i get a message
saying "you must specify a valid port to print to".
how come i ping the address but when i do a serch for a computer in the network it wont find it?

There is probably a network setup program that you can telnet to. Check the instruction manual.

Did you try to add the printer to one of your servers first?

Also, I know on an NT server, you can confure an LPR port.
