printer not ready

I configured the com1 port using dos mode
mode com1:9600,n,8,1
then i run foxpro for dos
on foxpro's prompt i type
set printer to com1
set printer on
? "test"

and an error message is displayed
printer not ready

can anybody help why i can't print
