I am using windows XP. I have a lexmark z33 usb printer. I am trying to add a printer in the printers section. I click on the add printer or i go to file- --> add printer and nothing comes up on the screen. I cannot add a printer for the life of me. It's as if the add printer function is disabled. The usb printer support is in the USB section under device manager when i plug it in.
The plug and play automatically recognizes it as a Lexmark z33 and starts to install it but then comes up saying that there was a problem with the install.
What can i do, short from reinstalling windows. I have added printers in the past and don't understand what's going on. Any help would be significantly appreciated.

Q

Try:

Cancel the New Hardware Wizard if it appears. Use the CD that came with the printer to do a setup of the printer. Then you can add printers if necessary.

i can't find the cd anywhere. I've tried device drivers but they don't work either.
Thks for your reply.

Q

Are you on a corporate network, or have you been? Could a network administrator have implemented a new policy restricting you from adding new printers?

If not, try the following link. It contains instructions to how to install your printer under Windows XP.

You might need to grab the latest driver from the Lexmark web site too.

Also, depending on how you feel about Microsoft service packs, download and install the pre-release version of XP SP2 from the Microsoft web site. It may resolve the problem your having. However, do this at your own risk after backing up any critical data!!!

i've tried old drivers new drivers all to no avail. When i install them it goes through and says

Cannot install this hardware
An error occurred during the installation of this device.
The specified procedure could not be found.

Click finish to close the wizard.

I'm confused... help.

With SP2 what have been the flaws??

Thanks for your replies.

Q

#I320 Class GUID of device remains: {4D36E979-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
#I060 Set selected driver.
#-166 Device install function: DIF_REGISTER_COINSTALLERS.
#I056 Coinstallers registered.
#-166 Device install function: DIF_INSTALLINTERFACES.
#-011 Installing section [INST_DRVR_NT.Interfaces] from "c:\windows\inf\oem15.inf".
#I054 Interfaces installed.
#-166 Device install function: DIF_INSTALLDEVICE.
#E154 Class installer failed. Error 127: The specified procedure could not be found.

Also if i open.. excel lets say.. i go to print, i click find printer the following message displays:

The directory service cannot be found.

Maybe this can help

I've googled the topic to death and can't find anything.

Thanks for all your help everyone

Q

Also receiving an error rundll32.exe - Entry point not found

The procedure entry point CMP_WaitNoPendingInstallEvents could not be located in the dynamic link library cfgmgr32.dll

Do a search on: cfgmgr32.dll

Do you have multiple copies?

i have 2 copies. one in the system32 directory.. the other in a Lastgood.temp/system32

Is this possibly the problem.

No, that sounds fine.

This still bothers me:
#-166 Device install function: DIF_INSTALLDEVICE.
#E154 Class installer failed. Error 127: The specified procedure could not be found.

Whatever procedure could not be found, it is not from the XP DDK function of DIF_INSTALLDEVICE, so it has to come from the coinstaller:
#-166 Device install function: DIF_REGISTER_COINSTALLERS.
#I056 Coinstallers registered.

Which is the driver from your printer OEM.

Ya, Im confused. I've uninstalled and reinstalled drivers several times. I just don't understand why the add printer link is dead. It won't even allow me access. It is not a security thing as i am the administrator for this computer.

Have you by any chance installed any of the Release Candidates for Xp SP2? If so I had a similar problem with my Lexmark x1130.

With RC2 installed I would get a "Specified Class does not exist" when installing the printer driver.

After uninstalling RC2 I would get the "Specified Module Does not exist." when installing the driver.

After trying various things I could not uninstall what ever change RC2 had made so did a fresh install of XP and the printer driver now installs.

I have reported this to MS, it seems that even when you uninstall XP SP2 RC2 there are still bits left behind. For example entering safe mode shows you windows version as the updated SP2 version not your original version???

gpalmer711,

How did you uninstall? Add/Remove programs, or System Restore?
