Printer Gobbles up ALL resources

I've been having a problem with my hpDeskjet 1000c printer. It's attached to my machine, and shared over our network. Whenever someone else sends to it, it takes up so many resources my machine completely locks up. I have to stop working and wait on the print to finish before it frees them up. Is there someplace or some setting where I can control this? [sig][/sig]

it's a small peer to peer network, with an eithernet hub, and a total of five machines. Physical limitations prevent me from just putting it onto another machine. I did get the latest drivers for the printer when I went from 95 to 98se. I've been to the HP site as well and gotten a big zero help factor. [sig][/sig]

peer to peer with a hub ? i don't think so . try changing the parallel port mode in the BIOS, ECP would be the best to go for, even a Beltin gold plated cable may help. [sig][/sig]

sorry i boobed on my peer to peer knowledge, i thought you were talking about BNC connection ( RG 58) . maybe try parallel port on Normal mode, remember to go into device manager and check that windows correctly finds this ( it may just bang ECP back in so your best just to remove it then go in to the BIOS ). also on a few HP printers theres an .ini file you can edit, lets you turn off things like bi directional comms, that may be worth a shot. go to START,FIND and search for hp*.ini . may list a couple the one you want will have lots of boxes with ticks in it.

WOW! I think setting it to normal did the trick. I have a bunch of prints coming from another machine as I type up this reply. I'll know better when we get the printer really hopping agin, but this seems to have done it. it still changes my current window between prints, but I can now go back to what I was doing without waiting.
