HI all -

I am kind of new to AIX in general and was wondering if anyoen could assist me with a printer configuration.

I've used SMIT to create a remote print queue. I have an HP 3800 that I created a queue on a windows 2003 server named aefserver and the queue name is AEF-Purc.

I used smit with the above information and it created the queue lp67 in the qconfig file and everything works great. The only problem is that I need this queue to print landscape instead of portrait.

Here is what is defined in the /etc/qconfig file:

I modifed the backend section from what smit generated which was backend = /usr/lib/lpd/rembak. I found this from another location and gave it a try.

I modified the qconfig file by hand using vi editor because I couldn't find in smit the location to change this line.

I then used chvirprt -q lp67 -d @aefserver to recompile the queue. I then tried enq -UP lp67 to make sure the queue was up. Everytime I print to the queue it comes out portrait.

I send test pages to the queue with the following command:

enq -P lp67 /etc/hosts

lp67:
device = @aefserver
up = TRUE
host = aefserver
s_statfilter = /usr/lib/lpd/bsdshort
l_statfilter = /usr/lib/lpd/bsdlong
rq = AEF-Purc
@aefserver:
backend = /usr/lib/lpd/pio/etc/priorlfb -f !

I'm not familiar with Win2003 Server, but can you set the queue to be landscape on aefserver?

When we print from one AIX box to another's printer, we set up a landscape queue on the destination, then just go with the default rembak backend on the origin.

Rod -

I tried that on the server and for some reason the print always comes out as portrait. The guys that used to support this created multiple queues previously on the AIX box but I'll take a look at the software khal found. I saw that too but wasn't too happy with having to pay for something that should be doable freely with the right configuration.

Did you switch back to rembak after you set the Windows queue to landscape?

The simplest option (well worth the money) would be to buy an HP JetDirect Print Server, connect the 3800 to it, and set up remote queues from both the AIX and Windows servers.

If the 3800 is new and you have a nice vendor, they might let you upgrade to a 3800n for the difference in list (probably a little more than the print server would cost, but it's nice to have the card built in).

Another thought:

If you can find documentation of the options supported by Windows 2003 LPD, you can use the -o argument to rembak to pass the landscape option to the remote queue.
