I hope someone can help!

I have a G3 Beige, as soon as I have 2 or more documents in the backround print spooler the Mac hangs.

I have done a clean install, re -installed the latest Epsom 880 driver, In desperation I have even disconnected the Ethernet (it's networked with a G4 Quicksilver).

I have also trashed the appleshare prep preference.

is it only the G3 that is hanging?

If you can't fix it in 20 minutes call someone who can.

yes the G4 is aok, on printing, I have other system problems, but they do not involve printing.

I heve reset the PRAM as well.

Thanks Louis

Have you run Norton Disk Doctor on the Computer?

When did you last rebuild the desktop? If you can't fix it in 20 minutes call someone who can.

Sorry to ask so many questions, but how much space is left on the HDD? If you can't fix it in 20 minutes call someone who can.

yes run NDD and Tech Tools, some bad mod dates, not much else. Massive amount of disk space for spool files 11.7Gb. I have not re-built, but I will now. I thought with a clean install I would not need to. My next step was to re-format and completely start again, may be even go to 10.1 - I'm that desperate. + I have spent more than 20 mins!

Dow!!!

OK think that Complete rebuild is over the top!

I have found in the past that it 80% of the time it is down to preference files.

You could try deleting all that is in printing prefs folder, and recreate the printers. Epson also have a folder in there, are there a load of tmp files in the epson folder?

Even if you reinstall the printer the preferences from the printer before are still there. If you can't fix it in 20 minutes call someone who can.

I have now wiped all prefs relating to printing. The complete Epsom pref folder.
I know this is silly but it hangs now when you even try to print with b/ground OFF. - This one really has me fooled. it's an old beige G3 with an ad on USB card, I cannot find any drivers for it, but it seems to talk to the printer thru the Apple USB driver.
Thanks for your help, getting closer to that re-build, but unsure whether this would actually fix it, as it prob is something really silly.

Did you know you can increase the "memory allocation" of the print monitor program? That might help.
Just do a get info on the app. & boost it up. Skagit Valley Publishing Company

Thanks David,
actually I completely forgot to do this. I have now, (to 5mb) , still no difference. In fact it freezes even with the backround printing OFF. I have even re-formatted -AND WRITTEN 0's (over the top know), then a new system- 9.2.1 and still I have the same problem. Although one by product is that my network actually sess my G4 , it never did--Red Herring , probably priveledges set-up wrong!
So 1.re -format 2. new system, latest Epsom Driver and still it freezes.
Next step to try Epsom on my G4 and see if it works.

How about upgrading to 9.2.2!! If you can't fix it in 20 minutes call someone who can.

Thanks for all your help, everyone. This has had me completely foxed. I have just ordered OSX!
Maybe it's about time I gave it a go.
