without any changes and/or reason suddenly users on the domain here are unable to print to a certain printer they used to print to. i rebooted the 2000 server, and also rebooted the pc that has the printer connected. all workstations that try to print get the message that the printer spool service isn't running, when i check the services it IS running (on the server, as well as on the pc w/ printer connected and also the workstation)

anyone any idea how to fix/troubleshoot this ?

thanks in advance.

Check on both XP computers:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\restrictanonymous

If the value is 2 or any value other than 1, change it to 1.

Reboot and test.

You might find an answer in the Mirosoft Troubleshooter:

Or by cleaning a corrupt printer driver:

i'll try this... still wondering how can it suddenly stop working ?

this is just weird... if i open a Windows Explorer window and type in the IP of the pc that has the printer i can see the printer, see the properties and print. when i after that go back to "Printers and Faxes" it's unable to connect and i can't do any of the previous mentioned things, what is going on here ?

The printer is using a static IP, correct?
You need to make sure that the Win200 server DHCP service has a reservation for the printer so that it always receives the same IP.

the printer does not have it's own IP, the pc has a static IP and i believe the other pc's "look" for the pc/printer name, it worked for at least a year w/o a issues.

Has the host name of the PC and/or the chare name of the printer changed?
Also, can the PC the printer is locally attached to print to said printer? If it can, you have a networking issue, if not, it's a local PC or a physical printer issue.

the pc connected to the printer can print w/ no problem, host and share-name have not changed. like said i can connect by opening a Windows Explorer and type the IP, but if i try to add a printer and type the IP it won't work.

the pc has a static IP" is not true, the pc has a dynamic IP from the DHCP.

oh, and they (users) can also no longer print/find the printer connected to the Windows 2000 server, previously they could.

Check that the "list in directory" option is still checked in the printer share properties.

yep, still on (just rechecked). i'm rebooting one of the pc in the hope the printer still works (directed it to the IP instead of pc name), if it works i guess i will have to live /w the mystery and give that pc a static ip.

Anything changed with your DNS servers and/or Netbios config?

like said, nothing changed that i know of.. for the time being i gave the pc that has the printer connected a static IP and point to there, hopefully that will keep working.

still ideas and/or tips are welcome..

Did you install any wndows updates? Does the host Pc have windows firewall enabled?

Make a reserveration in the DHCP server for an IP for each printer.

A DHCP reservation is a specific IP address within a scope permanently set aside for leased use by a specific DHCP client. Client reservations are made in the DHCP database using the DHCP snap-in and are based on a unique client device identifier for each reserved entry.

This way the printer always gets the same IP.
