If you have a printer shared on a Windows XP PC and want everyone to print to it, do you need to have a password and accounts for all the users?

I have a problem sharing a printer that works just like this. I tried enabling guest, and granting it rights and that didn't work. Keep getting access denied.

There is another XP PC in our organization that has a working public shared printer and I took note on how it was configured and found that the security tab was missing under the properties of the printer. The above PC has a security tab, but don't know why.

Any Ideas?

Thanks

Was the other PC using fat32 (and this one is using ntfs - or perhaps other one has simplfied sharing - is this a doamin or workgroup network)? Is simplified sharing disabled on your PC?

If you have simplfied sharing disabled, and its a workgroup network, then you will need user accounts set up on the printer machine which match all user logons which will use it (though if they are NT/2k/XP machines, should just get a prompt for valid username/password).

Simple file sharing was unchecked because we run several remote access software packages. This fixed my file sharing problem, but now I cant update the PC with security patches and virus signatures.

Thanks wolluf for pointing me in the right direction
