This might be a little elementary for this group, but if ya don't ask, ya don't get. :)

This shouldn't be a challenge, but I can't get it to work.

I'm making a training manual, and need to make some screen shots. Easy, right?

But the shots I'm taking are of open functions within some software. As in . . . in the software, I click "File". I get a drop down window with programmer options. If I try to do a screen shot with a window open (that's open to choose a function from) . . . I get nadda.

As soon as I close the window, I'm fine.

Or if I open Explore and reduce the window size so I can make a smaller pic, I hit "PrintScreen" and get nothing. If I hit “printscreen”, then open Paint, and try to paste in what I copied, I get an error that I don’t have enough memory to perform the function.

I have no memory issues. And closed unused apps. Still Nadda.

Among the things I tried was . . . setting my PDF maker as my print default. That works great "in" the software. But again, I can't snag a shot of open windows on my desktop.

I also have Software995. I can't get that to open if I have any windows, drop downs, etc. open.

Any ideas?

Hold down Ctrl and hit PrtScr and the whole screen gets dumped to the clipboard
Hold down Alt and hit PrtScr and just the current windw gets copied.
Open Word or whatever and Ctrl-v to paste it in.

Crop it a bit if desired.....

I appreciate your help! Thanks.

Yeah, I know how to do it. But it isn't working. :(

I DLd Snagit. And that doesn't work either. As soon as I click the Capture button, the drop down closes. I get the image with drop down closed. :(

With Snagit, set a delay (Capture > Timer Setup) then click to capture and during the delay period go open up whatever you want and then you will be able to capture it.

Enjoy,
Tony

I use Snagit 8 for my software manuals. I can pick certain areas or even drop down menus. It is a breeze, easy, quick and cheap.
