During boot(using win 98) fails to read drive in primary slot1 when two drives connected on both slots 0 and 1. Wondering if any BIOS / winxx/ PC speed restrictions
Thanks for any responses.

Howdy:

Boot into BIOS and make sure the IDE autodetect options are set to "auto"..

Hello, did that..
(BIOS has none/auto/disk0...disk49 options, chose auto for both the drives)
noticed that drive 0 (which has win98) is pulled down when ATA cable for the second drive connected

Check your ATA cable and make sure the drives are connected properly on it. If you are using the new 80 wire/40 pin cable, make sure you are connected as follows..

Blue: The blue connector attaches to the host (motherboard or controller).
Gray: The gray connector is in the middle of the cable, and goes to any slave (device 1) drive if present on the channel.
Black: The black connector is at the opposite end from the host connector and goes to the master drive (device 0), or a single drive if only one is used.

kirik-

What kind of motherboard/CPU?

And just so we're talking about the same thing: your motherboard has [at least] two IDE channels/controllers - one ribbon cable for each. Each one of those cables has plugs for two hard drives. When you say that the drive in "Slot 1" is not being recognized, do you mean that the drives are on two separate cables and the drive on the second [IDE 1 vs. IDE 0] is not being recognized?

Also, any device connected to an IDE ribbon cable has little jumpers on back that need to be set a particular way. The three most common (but not the only) settings are Master [or MA], Slave [or SL] and maybe Cable Select[or CS]. How is the second drive jumpered?
