VERSION 2111
RELEASE 23
ISSUE 55 +

We are being told that the DTI digital card we have won't support PRI and that in order to be able to get to PRI we have to do a COMPLETE upgrade. At first they thought we could just add the PRI card or add in a module card. Now told this is not an option.

Here is what they are suggesting:
Upgrade to CS1000E TDM, replace existing DTI card with PRI. Replace with new 202i CallPilot (120 mailboxes).

So do we really require a full complete way too much upgrade? I just want to make before we put down a ton of unplanned cash that what we are being told is true.

I will get these Monday Morning. If I do not have the packages would this be a reason requiring an upgrade?

Merdian Option 11c

When you print the PKG, it will be a loooong list. Then pose this question to your vendor, in these words:

"What package names/numbers do I need to get this PRI running"? Follow it with "Wasn't PRI available on Release 23.55"?

Because it was.

To add pri you need packages 145 isdn and 146 pri
go to load 22 and at the prompt req: prt
type: pkg 145
then enter if you get a 145 restricted then you could not
add pri and you would have to upgrade your system.

I have a 23.15 mini 11c with a pri so I know it's there, but we also have the packages required.

Yes you will require a upgrade

OLD ROLMEN WORKING ON NORTELS AND AVAYA

So in order to get this working I have to perform a $40,000 upgrade?

Merdian Option 11c

A large chunk of that is moving us to Call Pilot and off of Meridian Mail.

Merdian Option 11c

You've got to ask yourself what the future of CallPilot is. (don't ask me, I predicted it would last only a few years from the start).

Lots of people are looking at using MS Exchange, which will probably be compatible with more than Nortel in the future.

I can't see spending 40k on a Nortel system right now. I'd be looking at the secondary market... see what they suggest. Go big name, not independant junk dealer.

I believe the Nortel/Avaya roadmap calls for CallPilot to eventually (around version 7) merge with Avaya modular messaging.

Whenever that takes place, there will be a supported upgrade path for existing CallPilot users.

I would not be shy about upgrading or buying Nortel, as Avaya has made it clear that the platform will be around for quite a while.

23.55 is quite old, and you have been avoiding upgrading for a good many years. The price seems fair to me for what you will be getting.

An alternative option is to source a 2nd user system with the required packages and licenses and voicemail. You could then fire in a backup, block build mailboxes, and once your happy with setup, swap ssc cards and voicemail. You then have a system with PRI packages to add your new 'PRI' to for a lot less than the upgrade price.

but the big question is why a PRI now after all this time? Does someone want Caller ID? A big price to pay for one option.

Unless it's going to make your company money it's a tough call in the current economy.

there's absolutely nothing wrong with 23.55. Is it the preferred level of release? That depends on who you talk to. If you talk to the IT Director he will say no, but if you talk to the guy that has to write the check for the upgrade, CAS T1 service just might be good enough.

Janaya,
The reason is that we are moving to a service provided by Qwest that combines our data and voice into a single pipe using an Adtran 924e device. I have a meeting today at 10AM regarding this but so far my information tells me they can only provide to us PRI or single analog lines out. The analog lines would not allow us to keep our DID and we only have the equipment in our PBX to provide 7 concurrent connections via this route so we are kind of stuck at this moment with trying to get to PRI.

As Caller ID would be great it has nothing to do with the over all reason.

So based on this information from the old post and what is here if they can deliver a CAS signal to the PBX we would be able to survive until we can upgrade??

Merdian Option 11c

You should ask Qwest what you can get with the service. In our office we have the same setup now. WE have our Data and Voice coming over a single pipe and they split off our data and voice and our voice is a standard T1 (non-PRI). It's not a matter of it CAN'T be done, but maybe they don't have the equipment to provide that service.

This should be no harder than changing out the interface card in their equipment to provide the signaling to your equipment.

Remember you are paying for their service the way you want it, not the way they have to provide it. If they can only provide you PRI service then look to other CLECs like AirSpring or Windstream to provide this service to you. You will still get adjustable data bandwidth and the T1 signaling you need.

Hope this helps.
