IS-IT--Management

We are just moving from an ISP to our own Exchange servers (which we have ben using only for public folders). The users had ben POPing to an ISP set up to use our domain. Management does not want to use Exchange for email since they want to be able to POP in from anywhere and leave a copy on the server. We had to move this in house to the exchange server. With that in mind we have to have the same set up until we can convince them otherwise.

So, what we need it to have email on the exchange server & allow the users to POP to get it. The problem is that since they leave a copy on the server (they remove everything from the server when they make it in to the office)and then when they come into the office they get email from the exchange account as well as the POP account.

VPN is not always available to them and they are using laptops. That is why they are using POP.

i am doing the exact same thing. exchange supports POP and smtp automaticaly, you just need to connect using the pop protocol.
First, make sure you have applied all secutity updates, run the iis lockdown tool and have used the MS Baseline security anaylser to check your exchange server.

Once you have your exchange server secured, you will need to open ports 25 and 110 on your internet router and point them to your exchange server. (i do not suggest using DMZ settings for this, too much risk.)

An alternative to the above is to have an exchange front end serve (this requires Exchange Enterprise). This is much more complicated get a consultant to do it.

Ok, after your router is done, be sure to set your exchange server for authenticated only, no anonymouse access.

You can either make DNS records with your isp for pop and smtp ports or just use the ip address of your router for the clients that want IP access. just change the server address, username and password to the ones on your exchange server.
