I'm trying to update a quark document with a red background - that was not created by me. I just need to swap some images around. I have experimented with saving the images in different formats (tiff/photoshop eps and illustrator eps), but as soon as I "get the picture" it has a white background again.

I am using quarkexpress 4.

Would be gratefull for any advice.

In the colors pallet, change the background color to red (square box icon is background, box with x is picture, and double lined box is frame stroke). If you are using a tiff, this probably wont work. Photoshop eps must have a clipping path around your image so you can set the background color to red, and illustrator should work just fine.

This will change the picture box to red, not the image. So if the image fills the whole box, you will have to change it in your image app.

Quark can make it's own clipping path based upon the white backgground although it's not alll that precise. Select your picture box containing the tiff file. Set the background to red. Go to ITEM/CLIPPING. Under TYPE select Non-White areas and Apply. Experiment with the other variables. It may be good enough for what you want.

Create a clipping path in Photoshop - -save as an .eps files

Do not use Item clipping or non white areas in Quark. This wll give your print vendor headaches.'
